Position is responsible for organizing the athletic program at the assigned school. The position conducts practices, motivates students, and instructs student athletes in game strategies and techniques. Develops a winning program that results in student athletes achieving their potential academically, athletically, socially, and morally.
Essential Duties:
- Accepts responsibility for the enrollment, physical conditioning, and supervision of players in that sport.
- Instructs players in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport.
- Schedules the events for the sport for the season and communicates this to relevant stakeholders.
- Selects assistant coaches in collaboration with the principal and site athletic coordinator, and monitors their performance.
- Organizes and directs practice activities and exercises.
- Schedules practices and/or games during scheduled breaks, covering at least 50% of all breaks in the season.
- Notifies players and parents of these expectations before the season begins.
- Assesses player skills and monitors during competition and practice.
- Determines game strategy.
- Supervises athletes during games/matches and after events until facilities are secured.
- Follows procedures in case of athlete injuries.
- Models sportsmanship and maintains appropriate conduct.
- Performs academic eligibility checks and arranges tutoring as needed.
- Assists students in college selection and with athletic eligibility.
- Collaborates with other coaches and schools to develop a consistent program.
- Maintains and secures equipment room.
- Submits end-of-season reports as required.
- Participates in events like parent nights, banquets, awards, and pep rallies.
- Attends relevant meetings, workshops, and clinics.
- Supports administrative tasks related to eligibility and records.
- Engages in professional development activities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Specifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Must be employed by Oklahoma City Public Schools and familiar with relevant policies and rules.
- Effective coaching techniques and skills are required.
- Ability to establish effective relationships with stakeholders.
- Completion of specific training in injury prevention, coaching fundamentals, and heat illness prevention.
- Ability to accept constructive criticism and provide fair opportunities for all players.
- Membership in the Oklahoma Coach’s Association (OCA) is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience as a Head Coach at high school or college level is preferred.
Physical / Mental Requirements:
- Manual dexterity for writing and computer work.
- Visual acuity for reading and transcription.
- Normal hearing and clear speech for communication.
- Ability to perform physical tasks including occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Sitting for extended periods.
- Willingness to work outside regular hours, including weekends, under stressful conditions.
- Work environment is typically well-lit and climate-controlled.
