Job summary

The City of Eden Prairie is seeking an Adaptive Swimming Instructor for the Eden Prairie Community Center. This part-time, non-exempt position focuses on teaching people with disabilities basic stroke development, lifesaving safety skills, and comfortable pool use.

Responsibilities include creating clear lesson plans, supporting participants in and out of the water, communicating with parents and staff, and maintaining safety and excellent customer service.

Qualifications

• 1 year experience working/volunteering in recreation, aquatics, education, or related field.
• Two years experience working/volunteering with individuals with disabilities and the aquatics field strongly preferred.
• Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required or willingness to obtain.
• CPR/infant, child, and adult and First Aid/AED certified or within first 30 days.
• Experience working with or around individuals with disabilities; ability to be patient, flexible, and confidential.

Responsibilities

• Establishes clear individualized lesson plans and activities that support learning goals.
• Works with individuals who have cognitive, physical, or sensory differences in and out of the water.
• Assists participants in using age-appropriate self-management skills including communication and self-help.
• Provides the opportunity for success by adapting activities and providing additional assistance as needed.
• Encourages participants to be independent and respectful of learning styles.
• Ensures participant safety at all times.
• Delivers high quality customer service with a friendly, informative approach.
• Communicates with parents/guardians, program staff, and supervisor about progress.
• Performs a variety of duties as part of the City’s team.
