Job summary

YMCA is seeking an Outreach Adaptive Swim Instructor to lead swimming lessons for participants with special needs and promote water safety within the community. This role requires following YMCA guidelines, planning lessons, and coordinating with staff and volunteers.

The incumbent will maintain records, attend trainings, and help connect participants with YMCA programs while ensuring safety and adherence to policies.

Qualifications

• Candidates must have prior experience working with individuals with special needs.
• Demonstrate swim instructor skills in line with YMCA standards.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or prior experience teaching swimming.

Responsibilities

• Instructs swimming lessons to individuals with special needs per YMCA guidelines and prepared lesson plans.
• Maintains attendance and progress records.
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Organizes and puts away class equipment; reports damaged items.
• Trains and supervises class aides and volunteers as assigned.
• May attend community events sharing information on drowning prevention.
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and refers members to other YMCA programs as appropriate.
• Follows YMCA policies and safety procedures; completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
• May conduct classroom-based water safety education for children or adults.
• Encourages participant involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

Position Summary

A YMCA Outreach Adaptive Swim Instructor Swim Instructor provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students with special needs in swimming lessons and water safety events in the community.

Essential Functions

• Instructs swimming lessons to individuals with special needs as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
• Maintains records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
• Attends staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
• Organizes and puts away needed class equipment. Reports damaged equipment.
• Trains and supervises class aides and volunteers as assigned.
• May be asked to attend community events sharing information on Drowning Prevention
• Conveys information on aquatics programs and schedules and as appropriate refers members and participants to other YMCA programs.
• Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes incident and accident reports as necessary.
• May be asked to conduct classroom based water safety education to children and/or adults
• Encourages participant involvement and identifies potential volunteers.

Requirements

Education, Training and Experience

• Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification.
• Previous experience working with Individuals with Special Needs (required)
• Previous experience working with Individuals with Special Needs in swimming lessons or swim coaching (preferred)
• Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
• YMCA Swim Instructor certification or previous experience teaching swimming.
• At least 16 years of age.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques
• Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child
