Job summary

Fraser Public Schools seeks an Adaptive Physical Education Teacher for the elementary level. The role focuses on adapted PE instruction for students with disabilities, assessment, and collaborative planning with general and special education staff.

Responsibilities include designing inclusive activity lessons, supporting general PE teachers, and ensuring compliance with Special Education rules. Ten-month calendar with salary per negotiated contract; reporting to the Director of Special Education.

Qualifications

  • Valid Michigan teacher certificate.
  • Full approval in at least one area of special education.
  • K-6 Physical Education (MB) or Physical Education for Students with Disabilities (SP) Certification Preferred.
  • Proven experience in teaching Physical Education.
  • Must have (or secure within the first school year) CPI certification.
  • Meet the requirements as specified in the most recent Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education

Responsibilities

  • Provide adapted physical education instruction to students with disabilities.
  • Assess students for the purpose of providing adapted physical education.
  • Create and implement physical activity lessons with emphasis on personal adjustment for disability-related needs.
  • Plan instructional goals, objectives and methods with staff cooperation.
  • Provide supportive and consultative services to PE teachers and special education staff.
  • Understand curriculum theory, movement education, fitness and development.
  • Employ varied instructional techniques and media suitable for students' needs.
  • Align with district education philosophy and goals.
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Director of Special Education or Building Administrator.

TITLE: Adaptive Physical Education Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Michigan teacher certificate.

REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education and/or Building Administrator

SUPERVISES: All Students

JOB GOAL: To lead all students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and psychological growth and maturation.

ASSIGNED RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide adapted physical education instruction to students with disabilities whose disabilities may preclude integration into general physical education classes without supports or modifications.
  • Assess students for the purpose of providing adapted physical education.
  • Create and implement physical activity lessons with special emphasis on personal adjustment in respect to unique disability related needs for the purpose of creating successful learning opportunities.
  • Plan instructional goals, objectives, and methods and cooperates with other members of the staff in achieving these aims.
  • Provide supportive services in general physical education and consultative services to general physical education teachers or special education teachers.
  • Understand curriculum theory, curriculum development, movement education, fitness, developmental activity-based curriculum, human, and social development.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved, and the physical limitations of the location provided.
  • Strive to implement by instruction and action the district's philosophy of education and instructional goals, objectives, and content, as outlined in the appropriate course of study.
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities the Director of Special Education and/or Building Administrator may assign.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten (10) month year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board of Education
