Job summary

Barnes-Jewish Hospital at Washington University Medical Center (part of BJC HealthCare) is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide direct patient care on the 5400 Acute Care Medicine unit. This 25-bed unit operates under a Magnet-recognized program, emphasizing nursing excellence and professional development.

The RN will assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care, coordinate with physicians and staff, and educate patients and families on disease management and home care.

Qualifications

• RN license required.
• Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Responsibilities

• Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.
• Educates patients and families on illness/injury management, post-treatment home care needs, and medication administration.
• Promotes patient safety, quality, and regulatory compliance; participates in professional development.
• Develops and documents care plans with multidisciplinary team and communicates plan across care continuum.
• Assess patient needs and preferences, considering emotional, cultural, and spiritual factors.

Acute Care Medicine has patients with a full range of clinical issues-from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma and a multitude of other conditions and diseases.¿ Due to the patient acuity on the nursing division, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning.¿ Each unit is lead by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse.¿ The unit is supported by an advanced practice nurse.¿ Additionally each unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist.¿ This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the physicians, nurses and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities

• Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
• Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
• BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
