Qualifications:

  1. One-year experience in hemodialysis required
  2. Graduation from an approved School of Nursing
  3. CA Registered Nurse License - Required
  4. American Heart Association BLS Provider - Required
  5. Ability to work under pressure and demonstrate leadership potential

Must be able to complete training and demonstrate competencies in machine setup, initiation, and termination of treatment, monitoring of patient, and other functions necessary to complete a dialysis procedure.

Responsibilities include:

Patient Treatment Activities:
  1. Manage and direct care of fistula, shunts, grafts, and dialysis catheters. Understand care procedures and appropriate actions during access problems. Perform venipunctures, shunt care, and dressing changes.
  2. Ensure proper management of dialysis treatments for all patients under care.
  3. Administer and document medications, assess patient needs for PRN medications, and respond accordingly.
  4. Document assessments, evaluate, and respond to adverse reactions.
  5. Obtain and execute physician orders promptly and accurately.
  6. Perform lab procedures, including requisitioning, centrifuging, and specimen collection. Handle blood specimens using universal precautions, especially with hepatitis and bloodborne pathogen carriers.
  7. Implement individual patient care plans as prescribed, evaluate outcomes continuously.
  8. Understand and interpret lab values, explain issues to patients and staff.
  9. Monitor and evaluate patient signs, symptoms, and reactions, and take appropriate actions.
  10. Instruct patients and relatives on home care per physician’s instructions.
  11. Maintain medication logs.
  12. Supervise technicians to ensure completion of assignments.
  13. Conduct frequent patient rounds to ensure safety.
Other Patient Care Activities:
  1. Ensure all equipment tests are completed before dialysis initiation.
  2. Perform spot checks on machines and patients during dialysis to ensure safety and quality care.
  3. Check crash cart daily, per policy.

Additional duties include:

  1. Assist in maintaining inventory of stock medications.
  2. Perform and document initial nursing assessments for newly admitted patients.
  3. Demonstrate teaching skills regarding treatment procedures.
  4. Understand, perform, and lead emergency procedures.
  5. Assist in training and evaluating new employees.
  6. Maintain an empathetic attitude, counsel patients, and promote compliance.
  7. Exemplify professionalism and support center policies.
  8. Report defective equipment and maintain a safe environment.
  9. Report and address inappropriate conduct or behavior.
  10. Follow safety practices and universal precautions.
  11. Implement rules and regulations for staff, patients, and visitors.
  12. Maintain confidentiality of patient information and records.
