Position Summary

The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina is seeking applications for a full‑time academic trauma, surgical critical care, and acute care surgeon to join our Division of General and Acute Care Surgery. The Division of General and Acute Care Surgery is among 9 clinical Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 15 faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services while caring for injured and critically ill patients as well as emergency general surgery patients.

This position is being recruited as an open‑rank, open‑track appointment at an FTE between 0.5 FTE and 1.0 FTE. The appointment may also be offered as a fixed‑term track or tenure/tenure‑track appointment. The faculty member will be expected to perform both clinical and research duties, along with the academic responsibilities of an educational institution.

The Department of Surgery also has a one‑year Surgical Critical Care fellowship with up to four fellows each year.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

MD or equivalent, Board Certified/Eligible in General Surgery, and Board Certified/Eligible in Surgical Critical Care.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

The ideal applicant will have an interest in trauma, critical care, and acute care surgery and will already have previous work experience as a Trauma Surgeon. ECMO experience or the willingness to become proficient in adult ECMO care is desirable. Applicants with research experience in clinical outcomes, quality and safety, health services research, and basic and translational research. Applicants with additional expertise in rural trauma care and video‑based review education are encouraged to apply.
