Job summary

Security Benefit is seeking an Actuarial Financial Analysis and Modeling Intern to support assumption setting, data analysis, and reporting. You’ll contribute to Prophet modeling work and governance while gaining exposure to the Corporate Actuarial Department.

The internship is hybrid, with options to work remotely or on-site in Topeka, Overland Park, or Des Moines. Eligible students will pursue actuarial credentials and demonstrate strong Excel, VBA, SQL, and R skills.

Qualifications

  • Current full-time student in Math, Actuarial Science, Finance, or CS.
  • Actuarial credential prep or credit is preferred.
  • Advanced Excel with macros; VBA, SQL and/or R skills are required.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform data manipulation, organization, and analysis.
  • Help update and improve reports, spreadsheets, and docs.
  • Contribute to attribution analysis using Prophet Modeling.
  • Assist with actuarial assumption setting and governance.
  • Document assumptions and inventory; collect policy data.
  • Collaborate with Valuation, Product Development, Planning, and Finance.

About the Role:

As a Actuarial Financial Analysis and Modeling Intern, you’ll provide analysis and technical skills in support of fulfilling the strategic objectives for the Assumptions team within the Corporate Actuarial Department. The Intern will primarily assist with varying aspects of assumption setting and data analysis work. The Actuarial Intern position reports to Associate Actuary and can be based out of our office in Topeka or Overland Park, Kansas, Des Moines, Iowa, or remotely for the right candidate. We work a hybrid schedule, offering flexibility to work both remotely and on-site.

  • Conduct data manipulation, organization, and analysis
  • Assist with updating and improving reports, spreadsheets, and documentation
  • Contribute to attribution analysis of assumptions using Prophet Modeling software
  • Assist with the actuarial assumption setting process while ensuring compliance with the assumption governance framework
  • Assist with assumption documentation and assumption inventory
  • Collect, compile, and analyze policy level data
  • Develop strong relationships by collaborating with other departments and business units (Valuation, Product Development, Planning, and Finance areas)
What We’re Looking For:

Students eligible for the internship will be current, fulltime students available to work 10 - 20 hours a week, beginning in fall 2026. The intern will be expected to work during and between semesters, including full-time over the summer. This is not a summer only internship.

  • Full-time college student in Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences, Finance or Computer Science at the sophomore to graduate level
  • Commitment to pursue an actuarial credential demonstrated by preparation for Society of Actuaries-administered exams or exam credit preferred
  • Advanced Excel knowledge/skill required including functions and macro creation, editing and use
  • Demonstrated ability with Visual Basic coding, SQL and/or Rpreferred
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong GPA in major and in all areas of study
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines required
  • Accuracy and the ability to be very detail oriented
