Job summary

Maryland Department of Health's Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville seeks an Activity Therapy Associate I to support prescribed activity therapy programs and patient assessments for mentally ill or disabled individuals. This entry-level role assists in program delivery and may guide direct care staff, without supervising others.

Two years of related experience are required. Proficiency with MS Office and Google Workspace is desired.

Qualifications

  • Two years of experience assisting in the implementation of prescribed activity therapy programs under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
  • Experience assisting in patient/client assessments for mentally ill, aged, physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients.
  • Substitution of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university with at least 15 credit hours in health services, human services, education or the behavioral sciences for the required experience.
  • Military service in Therapy classifications or Therapy specialty codes can be substituted year-for-year for the required experience.

  • Provide guidance to direct care staff, students and volunteers as needed.
  • Support in delivery of activity therapy services within Court Involved (CI) facilities.

Main Purpose of Job

An Activity Therapy Associate I is the entry level of activity therapy support work at Maryland Department of Health (MDH) designated Court Involved (CI) Facilities, assisting in the implementation of the prescribed activity therapy programs and patient/client assessments for mentally ill, aged or physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients who are residents of State treatment facilities or community based programs. Employees in this classification do not supervise, but may provide advice and guidance to direct care staff, students and volunteers.


Minimum Qualifications

Experience : Two years of experience assisting in the implementation of prescribed activity therapy programs under the supervision of a healthcare professional to include assisting in patient/client assessments for mentally ill, aged, physically ill or physically disabled patients or developmentally disabled clients.


Notes


  • Candidates may substitute the completion of 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, with at least 15 credit hours in health services, human services, education or the behavioral sciences for the required experience.

  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Therapy classifications or Therapy specialty codes in the Therapeutic Recreation field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.


Desired Or Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience utilizing MS Office Suite (Excel, Word) and Google Workspace.

  • Experience planning, designing, and implementing Recreational Therapy Groups.


LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS


  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of an automobile. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

  • Employees in some positions in this classification may be required to operate vehicles which require a Class “C” motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

  • Employees in this classification may be required to successfully complete and maintain current certification of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training.

  • Employees in this classification at facilities with a swimming pool may be required to obtain Red Cross instruction and certification in Life Saving and Water Safety prior to appointment.
