Job summary

Harlow is seeking a part-time School Bus Driver in Volga Township, SD. You will transport students to and from school and events, ensuring safety and compliance with district, state, and federal rules.

Strong communication, dependable attendance, and the ability to manage expectations with students and parents are essential. Requires Class A or B CDL (or ability to obtain), endorsements P and S, and ability to pass a medical exam.

Qualifications

• Ability to pass medical examination.

Responsibilities

• Operate and safely drive a school bus under various conditions delivering students to school or events.
• Communicate bus rules and safety requirements to students and address behavior appropriately.
• Communicate with parents to resolve unsafe behavior using interpersonal skills.
• Assist students boarding and unloading, including wheelchair passengers.
• Inspect and perform routine maintenance and checks on the bus daily.
• Regulate climate controls for passenger comfort.
• Know and follow federal, state, and district rules for school bus operation.
• Comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
• Complete and submit records like pre/post trips, mileages, counts, and logs.
• Read maps and follow route logs accurately.
• Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
• Operate a two-way radio and maintain vehicle cleanliness.
• Coordinate with Safety Manager on OSHA/DOT compliance.

Job Summary

School Bus drivers are responsible for safely transporting students to and from school and related events. School bus drivers pick up students at a designated location, such as street corners or private homes and drop them off at school.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. 1. Operate and safely drive a school bus in either good or adverse weather, road and traffic conditions while transporting passengers to school or special events. Comply with traffic regulations while operating vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.
2. 2. Communicate bus rules, safety and behavior requirements to passengers; and address improper behavior immediately while using appropriate interpersonal communication skills.
3. 3. Communicate with student’s parents to solve inappropriate or unsafe behavior utilizing strong interpersonal communication skills.
4. 4. Assist students and passengers boarding and unloading the bus when necessary, including wheelchair students and adaptive equipment.
5. 5. Inspect buses daily to identify and report deficiencies. Perform vehicle maintenance procedures such as fluid and fuel levels, tire pressure checks, clean internal and external areas, install tire chains, and any other normal daily maintenance as required.
6. 6. Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
7. 7. Responsible to know rules, regulations (Federal, State and District) and laws concerning operation of a school bus; and comply with all traffic regulations.
8. 8. Comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
9. 9. Complete all records and reports timely and accurately such as pre-trip, post trip, route logs, mileage, student counts, seating charts, student reports, time sheets, and stop arm violations and submit to Transportation Department.
10. 10. Read maps, follow written and geographic directions according to route / trip logs.
11. 11. Performs other duties as assigned by leadership

14. 14. Responsible to work with Harlow’s Safety Manager on the implementation and compliance of all DOT and OSHA rules and regulations.

Experience and Skill Requirements

• Class A or B CDL, OR the ability to obtain.
