Job summary

The position requires a Bachelor's in Therapeutic Recreation or related field, with Master’s preferred, and at least two years of healthcare recreation experience.

Qualifications

• Two or more years’ experience in recreation in a healthcare setting.
• Knowledge of patient population served by the facility.

Responsibilities

• Complete activity assessment through patient observation and family interviews to inform the treatment plan.
• Plan, organize, direct and implement activities within the treatment program to meet goals.
• Plan and implement activities including therapeutic leisure skills, education and awareness.
• Facilitate and lead activity sessions to improve mental and physical well-being.
• Instruct patients in activities such as sports, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques.
• Develop and implement activity interventions to meet patient needs and goals.
• Promote safe use of leisure time and social skill development.
• Modify activities to suit specific groups.
• Direct and supervise activity staff when applicable.
• Maintain a positive, empathetic and professional attitude; address patient complaints.

Covington Behavioral Health Hospital is a licensed 104-bed center that specializes in treating adult patients who have been experiencing acute changes in their emotional and mental well-being.

Covington provides inpatient treatment to alleviate distress, provide stability, and improve each patient’s ability to live a productive and satisfying life.

Essential Functions

• Complete activity assessment through patient observation and patient/family interview, obtain information on the patient’s needs, skills, interests and limitations for the development and implementation of the treat plan.
• Plan, organize, direct and implement the activities within the treatment program to facilitate patient progress with treatment goals.
• Plan and implement an activities program including but not limited to therapeutic leisure skills and activities, leisure education and leisure awareness.
• Facilitate and lead activity sessions to improve patient mental and physical well-being.
• Instruct patients in activities and techniques, such are sports, dance, music, art or relaxation techniques designed to meet their specific needs.
• Develop treatment plans and implement activity interventions that meet patient needs and interests and help the patient achieve his/her treatment goals.
• Plan and implement activity interventions that promote a safe use of leisure time.
• Provide activity interventions to promote the development of social skills and leisure independence.
• Modify activities to suit the needs of specific groups.
• Direct and supervise activity staff in their implementation of the activity therapy program and services, if applicable.
• Demonstrate a positive, empathetic and professional attitude towards customers always. When patient needs are not met, acknowledge and work to resolve complaints. Recognize that patient safety is a top priority.

Education/Experience/Skill Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreational Therapy or related field required.
• Master's degree preferred.
• Two or more years’ experience in recreation in a healthcare setting with knowledge of patient population served by the facility is required.

Licenses/Designations/Certifications

Can also be an art or music therapist.

• CPR and de-escalation/restraint certification required (training available upon hire and offered by facility).
• First aid may be required based on state or facility.
