Job summary

The University of South Carolina Press in Columbia seeks an entrepreneurial full-time Acquisitions Editor to acquire 20-25 books annually in Southern history, African American studies, and civil rights studies. This in-person role emphasizes building relationships on campus and across the state, with a focus on peer-reviewed and regional titles.

Based in Columbia, the Press collaborates with faculty and editors, supports Open Carolina, and seeks candidates with strong scholarship, publishing

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a job-related field.
• Two+ years of related experience, or equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
• Master's degree and two years or Bachelor's degree and four years professional work experience in book publishing and acquisitions.
• Demonstrated track record of publishing acquisitions productivity and success.
• Demonstrated expertise and/or interest in one or more of the primary acquisitions areas.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities

• Acquisitions: contract publishing projects and solicit submissions.
• Transmittals: send manuscripts to Editorial, Design, Production; ensure deadlines.
• Positioning: help position projects with Marketing through copywriting.
• Community engagement: represent the Press at university, community, and scholarly events.
• Mentorship: supervise and mentor student interns.
