Job summary

UT Southwestern Medical Center seeks an Accounting Supervisor to provide skilled clerical accounting work and lead a major fiscal operations section. The role oversees staff, enforces internal controls, and partners with departments to streamline reporting and processes.

The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, with 7 years of related experience including 2 years in a lead role; a Bachelor's degree is preferred.

Qualifications

• Experience with GAAP and accounting software
• Lead role experience in accounting/finance
• Familiarity with major ERP systems
• Strong internal controls and process improvement mindset
• Ability to collaborate with Information Resources and other departments

Responsibilities

• Lead AP and financial processes to achieve improvements in line with annual targets
• Supervise Accounting Clerks and staff, including training and performance evaluation
• Ensure accuracy and timely reporting; resolve issues with data and vouchers
• Maintain written procedures and monitor departmental metrics
• Assist project managers with financial questions and reporting requirements
• Support monthly/yearly close and audits

JOB DUTIES

• AP Performance & Financial Improvement
  • a. Demonstrate continuous performance improvement in targeted areas of responsibility in alignment with the overall annual UTSW performance improvement targets. Meets or exceeds financial goals and objectives of the department.
  • b. Continuous collaboration with the appropriate departments, such as Information Resources, in the design, development and implementation of streamlined processes, best practices and internal controls. Confers as necessary with computer programmers in establishing new or revised procedures affecting production of reports or entry of vouchers or other data in the accounting system or other application.
  • Utilizes software to audit for compliance and proactively addresses issues resulting in permeant solutions.
  • Works on financial audits and other UTSW responses as needed.
  • Create and deliver presentations to both their team as well as departments if necessary.
• Managing Staff
  • a. Selects and hires employees. Trains and evaluates employees to enhance their performance, development, and work product.
  • b. Addresses performance issues and makes recommendations for personnel actions.
  • c. Motivates and rewards employees including providing performance evaluations and promotions within allocated budgets and company guidelines.
  • d. Coordinates and supervises work of Accounting Clerks and other staff engaged in preparation of basic accounting data for entry into accounting system and ensuring proper workload distribution among assigned personnel.
• Ensure Accuracy and Problem Resolution
  • a. Ensures work product is accurate, timely, and adheres to policies and procedures; checks for proper documentation.
  • b. Resolves problems regarding work produced by their team or division.
  • c. Works with major vendors by with respect to unpaid vouchers and other related problems resulting in solutions.
  • d. Submits jobs and/or reviews reports to ensure validity of information added to accounting transaction file or other application; makes appropriate corrections as necessary.
  • Provides excellent customer service both internal and external.
• Maintain Policy & Procedures and Reporting
  • a. Maintains written procedures; maintains production report statistics.
  • b. Develops and monitors metrics, reporting and the performance of their team.
  • c. Manage monthly/yearly closing of financial records by ensuring all documents received have been processed/accrued for in the respective reporting period.
  • d. Reviews and ensures accuracy of reconciliations.
• a. Provides accounting assistance to project managers and operations staff; responds to financial questions/concerns to meet business needs.
• b. Prepares and completes various projects as requested by management using appropriate accounting skills and software.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
