Job summary

Doeren Mayhew is offering an Accounting Intern position in Birmingham, AL, for the spring internship program running from January 2028 to April 15, 2028. Interns will work alongside seasoned professionals, learning to utilize software, and understanding preparation procedures while performing responsibilities similar to first-year associates.

Responsibilities include assisting with a variety of tax returns, gaining exposure to audits, and completing introductory audit training.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting (Spring 2028).
• 3.0 GPA (cumulative and in accounting major).
• Ability to work 40 hours per week.
• Work experience preferred (related or unrelated to accounting).

Responsibilities

• Assist with tax returns for corporate, individual, partnerships, C-Corp and S-Corp.
• Gain exposure to tax returns across industries (manufacturing, construction, non-profit, auto, retail, restaurant).
• Participate in at least one audit engagement during the internship.
• Complete introductory audit training covering audit processes and standards.
• Assist with basic audit procedures and gain exposure to assurance services while mainly supporting tax engagements.

Doeren Mayhew’s hands‑on internship program will provide you the opportunity to work alongside seasoned pros in the industry, helping you navigate and challenge accounting and business norms.

Our spring internship program will run from January 2028, until no later than April 15, 2028. Interns typically work 40 hours per week.

Accounting Intern

As an accounting intern at Doeren Mayhew, you will go through a hands‑on training program, in which you will learn how to utilize software programs, develop an understanding of preparation procedures and work closely with seasoned professionals including principals. Your responsibilities and experiences will be similar to those of our first‑year associates and are a great way to see firsthand how rewarding a public accounting career can be.

Responsibilities:

• Work with a variety of tax Principals, Managers, Associates and other interns on an array of tax returns
• Assist with preparation of corporate and individual tax returns including partnerships, C-Corp and S-Corp returns
• Gain exposure to tax returns in a variety of industries including manufacturing, construction, non-profit, auto dealership, retail, restaurant and more
• Participate in at least one audit engagement during the internship, with opportunities to participate in additional engagements based on client and staffing needs
• Complete introductory audit training covering the audit process, fundamental procedures, workpaper documentation, and professional standards
• Assist with basic audit procedures and gain practical exposure to assurance services while primarily working on tax engagements

Qualifications for all opportunities:

• Pursuing a bachelor's or master’s degree in Accounting
• Completion of Intermediate Accounting I by Spring 2028
• Completion of Business Taxation by Spring 2028 preferred
• 3.0 GPA (cumulative and in accounting major)
• Ability to work 40 hours per week
• Work experience preferred (related or unrelated to accounting)
• Strong drive and motivation to pursue a career in public accounting in Birmingham
• Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to take initiative via work experience and/or extracurricular activities
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Proven time management skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities
• High degree of curiosity, willingness to learn, and enthusiasm
