The Urban Institute is seeking an Accounting Director to lead its Controller Department. This leadership role oversees accounting operations, close processes, billing, revenue recognition, accounts payable, payroll, and financial reporting, ensuring GAAP compliance and strong internal controls.

• Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial close, general ledger accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
• Progressive accounting experience with leadership, including developing staff.

Responsibilities

• Lead full-cycle accounting operations including general ledger and month-end close.
• Review GAAP-compliant transactions, estimates, and account analyses for audit readiness.
• Direct billing and revenue accounting for government contracts, foundations, and other funders; ensure accurate invoicing.
