Position Overview:
Accountant II
Under general supervision, theposition performs a range of detailed, moderately complexprofessional accounting functions. Work assignments at this leveltypically include: examination, analysis, maintenance,consolidation and reconciliation of financial records; creation andinterpretation of financial statements and reports; participationin the development of budgets; may be assigned responsibility toprovide training, supervision and/or assistance to otheremployees.
- Analyze accounting records for accuracy and completeness
- Research and resolve accounting problems and/ordiscrepancies
- Research and apply new accounting standards
- Research and apply relevant local, state, and federalregulations; Prepare, review or approve required returns andreports
- Generate standard and custom financial statements and otherreports
- Oversee proper classification and coding of income andexpenditures
- Analyze and forecast revenue and expenditure trends
- Assist in calculation of various departmental and Universityrates
- Analyze expenditures charged for appropriateness and compliancewith University policy and procedures
- Interact with internal and external auditors and participate inauditing projects
- Recommend improvements in workflows, procedures andprocesses
- Conduct financial analysis of projects and prepare specialreports
- Oversee and monitor accounting processes, schedules anddatabases
- Perform complex reconciliation functions
- Other duties as assigned
Accountant III
Working independently or underbroad direction, the position performs specialized and complexprofessional accounting responsibilities using a thorough knowledgeand understanding of generally accepted accounting principles andpractices. Work assignments at this level typically include:creation and interpretation of complex financial statements andreports; monitoring and analysis of financial statement trends andvariances; analysis of accounting control procedures andrecommendation of changes or modifications; training andsupervision of clerical, technical, or professional employeesengaged in accounting or financial record-keeping work.
- Create internal and externally audited financialstatements
- Analyze accounting records for accuracy and completeness;oversee proper classification and coding of income andexpenditures
- Analyze trends of financial records; forecast revenue andexpenditure trends
- Research and resolve complex accounting problems and/ordiscrepancies
- Research and apply new accounting standards to financialreporting; evaluate the soundness and adequacy of accounting,financial and other operating controls
- Research and apply relevant local, state, and federalregulations; prepare, review or approve required returns andreports
- Lead the calculation of various departmental and Universityrates
- Negotiate federal Facilities and Administration (F&A)Rates
- Coordinate the accounting closing to include processing ofexternal required documentation and all required forms
- Supervise accounting processes, schedules and databases
- Perform or review annual reconciliations of various financialstatement accounts
- Review, identify and resolve systems and procedural problems;recommend improvements
- Take necessary action to resolve customer problems ordiscrepancies
- Interact with internal and external auditors; may serve asliaison with external agencies and auditors
- Coordinate some or all aspects of financial statement auditfieldwork and reporting
- Other duties as assigned
Required Experience:
Accountant II
- Two years of progressively responsible accounting experience ina computerized accounting system
Accountant III
- Three years of professional accounting experience including:
- Preparing financial statements
- Interpreting financial information
Required Education:
Accountant II or III
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or equivalent ORMaster's degree in accounting
Required Other:
Accountant II or III

- Experience working in a complex, decentralized accountingenvironment
- Experience with governmental fund accounting
- CPA, CMA, CGFM or other accounting certification
- Experience with accounting for complex investment assets
- Experience in the preparation of GAAP financial statements
Accountant III
- CPA, CMA, CGFM or other accounting certification
- Master's degree in accounting, finance, business/publicadministration or closely related field
- Not-for-profit or governmental fund accounting experience
- Experience leading or directing the work of others
- Experience with accounting for complex investment asset
