Job summary

Accountant II – University of Wisconsin‑Milwaukee (UWM)

Job Title: Accountant II

Reports to: Divisional Finance Officer for the CAA

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain automated financial systems, recommending controls to ensure system reliability and data integrity.
  • Prepare and/or approve financial transactions and payments.
  • Prepare and analyze financial data, reports, and records; identify discrepancies, investigate, recommend solutions, and implement improvements as needed.
  • Answer questions and provide accounting-related information to internal and external stakeholders in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Organize, prepare, and update financial statements, monthly and year‑end journal entries, accounts, ledgers, and reports for various financial needs within an automated financial system.
  • Provide and prepare budgets and projections based on existing data and established policies and procedures.
  • Assist with accounting and reviewing reconciliations, journal entries, schedules, and reports.
Required Qualifications
  • Associate degree in business, finance, accounting, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of accounting or financial reporting/auditing experience.
  • Proficiency with Excel, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
  • Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Workday.
  • Experience in higher education, government, and/or non‑profit environments.
  • Experience supporting faculty grants, sponsored projects, or restricted funds accounting.
  • Experience providing customer service to a variety of audiences (responding to inquiries, troubleshooting, follow‑up, basic training, communicating technical concepts).
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage competing transactions.
Compensation

$70,000 salary; determined by the finalist’s experience, training, education, and equity‑based factors.

Location

Work will be performed primarily on‑site; occasional remote work as approved.
