Job summary

Evergy is seeking an Accountant I to join our finance team in Topeka, KS or Kansas City, MO. The role covers core accounting functions including accruals, prepaid expenses, GL and bank reconciliations, with opportunities to drive process improvements and contribute to regulatory filings.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's degree in accounting, advanced Excel skills, and preferred familiarity with PeopleSoft, PowerPlan or Workiva.

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

JOB TITLE: Accountant I
REQUISITION: ACC002E
DEPARTMENT: Controller - Topeka General Office or Kansas City Headquarters
LOCATION: Topeka, KS or Kansas City, MO
PAY RANGE: Accountant I: $54,400 - $68,000

Scheduled Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Additional hours as needed.

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities: This accountant may be involved in various corporate accounting functions including but not limited to accruals, prepaid expenses, general ledger account reconciliations, and bank reconciliations, as required. Specific duties may be assigned depending on individual's skillset, desires, and organizational needs. This person should possess an aptitude for learning and initiating process improvements. This position is responsible for ensuring transactional compliance with various regulatory guidelines, GAAP, and internal policy and providing information and analysis to support various regulatory filings. In addition, the accountant may be involved in system implementations, process improvement projects, and preparing data request responses in addition to regular duties.

Education and Experience Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree with an accounting major.
• Advanced proficiency in Excel.
• Preferred qualifications include utility industry experience and PeopleSoft, PowerPlan or Workiva experience.

• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills to solve accounting problems.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Independently research and make recommendations on how to comply with accounting standards.
• Work with other groups in the company to ensure accounting transactions are recorded accurately/efficiently and find solutions to accounting or system issues.
• Display initiative and self-reliance with ability to self-prioritize multiple projects and strict deadlines while maintaining high-quality performance under pressure.
• Maintain effective internal controls by developing and following procedures and maintaining adequate supporting documentation and audit trails for all aspects of responsibilities.

Working Conditions: Office environment with both in office and remote working conditions. In office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays with option to work remote the rest of the week.
