Job summary

The University of Texas at Arlington is seeking an Accountant I to provide financial and administrative support for departmental operations. You will reconcile ledgers, analyze reports, process budget transfers, and monitor cost centers, while coordinating purchases and inventory under university policies.

Required is a Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; two years of experience with PeopleSoft and Excel is preferred. Hybrid schedule with potential one day remote per week.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required in accounting, finance, business administration or related field.
  • Preferred: accounting degree plus two years of experience, including detailed reconciliations and proficiency with PeopleSoft and Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Perform regular reconciliations of general ledger accounts and department cost centers, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Monitor departmental budgets and maintain detailed financial spreadsheets for funds and expenditures.
  • Prepare and submit purchase requests (Mav eShop carts, requisitions, POs, quotes, service contracts) in line with policies.
  • Explain university purchasing rules and advise on allowable expenditures.
  • Collaborate with department staff and Accounts Receivable to verify deliverables and authorize payments.
  • Prepare, enter, and track budget corrections, transfers, and journal entries.
  • Support department operations and financial integrity through additional duties as assigned.

Job description

Purpose of Position The Accountant I provides financial and administrative support for departmental operations. Responsibilities include reconciling financial statements, analyzing reports, processing budget transfers, and monitoring cost centers and project accounts. This position also assists with purchasing and inventory management by coordinating the ordering of supplies, equipment, and related services in compliance with university policies and procedures.

Essential Functions
  • Perform regular reconciliations of general ledger accounts, department cost centers, and ProCard transactions. Investigate and resolve discrepancies while maintaining accurate and complete supporting documentation.
  • Assist with monitoring departmental budgets and maintaining detailed financial spreadsheets to ensure accurate tracking of funds and expenditures.
  • Prepare and submit purchase requests, including Mav eShop carts, requisitions, purchase orders, quotes, service contracts, and ProCard purchases in accordance with university policies.
  • Interpret and explain university purchasing rules and regulations.
  • Advise department staff on proper purchasing methods and allowable expenditures.
  • Collaborate with department personnel and Accounts Receivable to verify purchase order deliverables and authorize timely vendor payments.
  • Prepare, enter, and track budget corrections, transfers, and journal entries to ensure proper accounting and reporting.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support departmental operations and financial integrity.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Accounting degree and two (2) years of experience to include preparing detailed reconciliations and experience using PeopleSoft and MS Excel.

Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday; 8:00am through 5:00pm.
  • May be allowed 1 day per week for remote work.
