Job summary

Madison Industries seeks a Senior Accountant to support our Finance team with general ledger accounting, cost accounting, and month-end close activities. The role collaborates across departments to strengthen and scale our accounting function during growth, improve processes, and support ERP optimization in a manufacturing setting.

Key focus areas include standard costing, inventory valuation, variance analysis, and cross-functional reporting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience in manufacturing.
  • Strong general ledger and cost accounting expertise.
  • Experience with manufacturing ERP systems is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, reconciliations, and schedules.
  • Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes with accuracy.
  • Perform cost accounting, including standard costing, inventory valuation, and variance analysis.
  • Analyze production costs and overhead allocations to support product costing and margins.

Job description

The Senior Accountant will function as a key member of our Finance team and will be accountable for general ledger accounting, cost accounting, and month-end close activities in support of the company's growth and manufacturing operations. This role will have regular interaction across all company departments, will be well supported through formal training and direct coaching, and affords future career advancement opportunities within the Finance organization. This is an opportunity to help strengthen and scale the accounting function during a period of growth by improving processes, enhancing internal controls, supporting ERP optimization, and helping build a best-in-class finance organization. Success in this role requires a collaborative mindset and a willingness to share knowledge, improve processes, and contribute to a highly cross-functional accounting team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in maintaining the general ledger, including preparing and posting journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules
  • Participate in month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial results
  • Perform cost accounting functions, including standard costing, inventory valuation, variance analysis, and manufacturing cost analysis
  • Analyze production costs, labor, and overhead allocations to support accurate product costing and margin analysis
  • Analyze financial statements and management reporting packages for review by finance leadership
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, including cost center and manufacturing cost analysis
  • Assist with internal controls, process documentation, and compliance with GAAP and company accounting policies
  • Support the organization's audit readiness initiatives through reconciliations, documentation, process improvements, preparation of audit schedules, and responses to auditors and tax preparers.
  • Partner with Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Purchasing, and Finance leadership to improve inventory accuracy, product costing, and financial reporting.
  • Support ERP system maintenance, enhancements, implementations, and integrations; contribute to system setup, data conversions, and continuous process improvements.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy of accounting operations.
  • Develop and maintain accounting procedures and work instructions to improve consistency, cross training, and business continuity.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior accounting staff
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required; CPA or CMA a plus
  • Strong general ledger accounting experience, including journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close
  • Demonstrated cost accounting experience, including standard costing, inventory valuation, and variance analysis
  • Background in a manufacturing environment required
  • Experience with manufacturing ERP systems (such as Plex, QAD, SAP, Epicor, Infor, Oracle, or similar); implementation, integration, or data conversion experience is highly preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to communicate confidently and professionally with cross-functional teams and leadership
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
  • Proven ability to identify problems, investigate root causes, and implement practical solutions within a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Advanced working knowledge of Excel; experience with financial reporting and accounting software
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and internal control principles
  • Display a strong drive for continuous improvement, challenging the status quo, and meeting business targets
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as accounting policies, procedure manuals, and audit requirements
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant accounting experience, including general ledger and cost accounting; manufacturing industry experience required
  • Experience with Fixed Asset accounting preferred.
