Job description

We believe every child deserves access to a high-quality public education and that families deserve trustworthy choices. Larson Communications is a strategic communications firm partnering with education reform organizations, public school systems, charter school networks and aligned nonprofits to strengthen options for families and improve outcomes for students nationwide.

About the Role

Client Value is our North Star. It’s why we’re here.

The Account Executive (AE) plays a central role in delivering that value through strong media relations, sound news judgment and disciplined execution. This role is responsible for consistently generating high-quality news media placements that advance client narratives and strategic priorities.

The ideal candidate brings a can-do attitude, demonstrates initiative and takes responsibility for making things right, not just being right. They are a proactive media relations practitioner with strong story instincts who can pitch reporters effectively, identify timely opportunities for coverage and sustain narrative momentum through a consistent cadence of placements. Through strong judgment, storytelling and follow-through, the AE helps clients reach national and regional audiences and advance their missions.

Responsibilities
  • Act as a primary day‑to‑day client contact, building and maintaining strong, trusted relationships by identifying problems early, bringing forward solutions and demonstrating sound judgment and follow‑through.
  • Lead proactive media relations by pitching reporters, securing placements and sustaining narrative momentum with national and regional news outlets.
  • Identify timely opportunities for coverage, including trend stories, breaking news moments and newsjacking opportunities that align with client priorities.
  • Develop and execute storylines and narrative arcs that generate consistent media coverage over time rather than one‑off placements.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with reporters, editors and producers across relevant platforms.
  • Track and report media placements, ensuring coverage reaches key audiences and contributes to client strategy.
  • Draft and finalize high‑quality communications materials including press releases, media pitches, fact sheets, talking points and presentations.
  • Coordinate media outreach campaigns and manage pitching workflows to maintain consistent placement cadence.
  • Stay current on emerging trends in public relations, media and the education landscape to inform media strategy and execution.
  • Serve as an ambassador of Larson Communications by representing the firm with professionalism, credibility and a team‑first mindset when engaging with clients, media and professional peers.
Qualifications
  • 3–5 years of experience in public relations, communications or public policy with significant exposure to media relations.
  • Demonstrated experience pitching reporters and securing news media placements.
  • Track record of consistent media placements across local, regional or national outlets.
  • Strong news judgment and ability to identify compelling story angles tied to current events and broader trends.
  • Strong understanding of narrative development and storytelling that drives sustained media coverage.
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly for press releases, pitches and media‑facing communications.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams and tight deadlines while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and professional judgment when interacting with clients and journalists.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, public policy or a related field.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience securing placements in national or multi‑syndicate publications.
  • Experience pitching across multiple beats including policy, politics, business, education or general news.
  • Experience supporting integrated communications campaigns that combine media relations with digital and social amplification.
  • Experience working with charter schools, public school systems or education reform organizations a plus.
  • Familiarity with tools such as Asana, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and media databases.
Pay Range and Compensation Package
  • Salary range: $46,300–$60,000, based on experience, qualifications, organizational equity and budget.
  • Comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, vision, mental health and life insurance.
  • 401(k) with matching contribution.
  • Flexible vacation and sick time.
  • Paid company holidays.
