Job summary

Black Canyon Consulting is seeking a Backend Engineer to support the NCBI Login and MyNCBI Account infrastructure at NIH. You will maintain legacy systems, migrate to modern identity platforms, and build secure, scalable back-end services for millions of biomedical users.

You will work across Linux environments, implement SAML/OIDC/OAuth/JWT, and lead ICAM migration efforts while ensuring production stability and compliant data handling.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.
• Strong backend skills: C++, Python, and SQL.
• Extensive Linux/Unix system experience.
• Experience with authentication protocols (OAuth, OIDC, SAML, JWT).
• Experience with Microsoft SQL Server and relational DB design.
• Version control (Git, SVN) and CI/CD practices.
• XML and XSLT experience.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and stabilize legacy backend services for NCBI Login and MyNCBI.
• Build, deploy, and maintain backend binaries and CGI scripts on AlmaLinux and Unix/Linux environments.
• Develop and optimize backend services with focus on security, compliance, and performance.
• Integrate third-party IDPs and manage federation data feeds; implement SAML, OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and JWT authentication protocols.
• Lead migration efforts to NIH ICAM standards and support user account migrations.

Black Canyon Consulting seeks an NCBI Login and MyNCBI Account Backend Engineer to support and modernize authentication and account management infrastructure for the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at NIH. This role involves maintaining legacy systems, facilitating migration to modern identity platforms, and ensuring robust, secure, and scalable backend services for millions of biomedical users.

What You'll Do

• Maintain and stabilize legacy NCBI Login and MyNCBI Account backend services, including troubleshooting, patching, and ensuring production stability during migration phases
• Build, deploy, and maintain backend binaries and CGI scripts across multiple environments on AlmaLinux and other Unix/Linux platforms
• Develop and optimize backend services using C++, Python, Django, and SQL with focus on security, compliance, and performance
• Integrate third-party identity providers (IDPs) and manage federated account data feeds; implement SAML, OAuth 2.0, OIDC, and JWT authentication protocols
• Lead migration efforts from legacy authentication systems to NIH ICAM standards and support user account migration, linking, merging, and retiring local credentials

What You Need

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
• Strong proficiency in backend programming with C++, Python, and SQL
• Deep experience with Linux environments and Unix systems
• Experience with authentication and authorization protocols (OAuth, OIDC, SAML, JWT)
• Extensive experience with Microsoft SQL Server and relational database design and optimization
• Proficiency with version control (Git, SVN), CI/CD tools, and DevOps practices
• Experience with XML and XSLT

Nice to Have

• Experience integrating with third-party applications and secured data sharing
• Experience with agile development processes
• Ability to work with legacy systems and facilitate migration to modern platforms
