Los Alamos National Laboratory seeks a skilled CAD drafter to join the Accelerator Operations and Technology Division. You will create and revise 2D electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and system interconnection diagrams for accelerator controls and instrumentation.
Responsibilities include developing cable/harness drawings, applying drafting standards, and performing as-built verifications, with collaboration across engineers, technicians, and fabricators.
At the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), engineers, technologists, technicians, and designers operate and modernize an 800‑MeV proton accelerator complex that supports national security, isotope production, proton radiography, materials research, neutron science, future accelerator missions, and more.
The selected candidate will join the Controls and Timing Systems Team within the Instrumentation and Controls Group (AOT-IC), part of LANL's Accelerator Operations and Technology Division. AOT-IC develops and supports controls, instrumentation, beam-diagnostics electronics, printed circuit boards, electronic and mechanical CAD capabilities, data acquisition, and network and timing‑critical accelerator facility.
This role focuses on 2D electrical and electronic system documentation for accelerator controls and instrumentation. Wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, cable and harness drawings, and system interconnection diagrams are expected to make up most of the work, particularly in support of the LANSCE Accelerator Modernization Project (LAMP). Mechanical drawings and 3D models may also be needed as project requirements change. You will work closely with engineers, technologists, technicians, installers, and fabricators to turn requirements, sketches, and field information into accurate design packages.
You will independently complete established electrical design and drafting assignments and contribute to complex work with guidance. You will create and revise wiring diagrams, schematics, equipment layouts, and design packages; apply standards; maintain controlled drawing records; and coordinate with engineers and technicians to resolve documentation issues. The role includes using PDM workflows, with the expectation that you will learn the team's tools and processes. Success requires sound CAD skills, attention to detail, and practical judgment.
