Position Overview

The University of Utah Department of Psychiatry, in partnership with the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI), is inviting applications for faculty Inpatient Community Psychiatrist positions at the Kem and Carolyn Gardner Mental Health Crisis Care Center (MHCCC). This state-of-the-art facility serves as the primary crisis care center for Salt Lake County, featuring an 82,000-square-foot space with a 23-hour receiving center, a 24-bed inpatient unit, and dedicated floors for comprehensive services including case management, legal aid, and addiction treatment. Set to open in early 2025, the center aims to de-escalate, stabilize, and connect adults in mental health crisis to community resources, providing a welcoming and secure environment.

Successful candidates will hold a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, with rank based on experience and contributions. The role involves guiding multidisciplinary teams, supervising psychiatric residents, and engaging in teaching, research, and administrative activities.

Qualifications
  • Experience or strong desire to provide psychiatric care to those in crisis
  • Unrestricted medical license in Utah or eligibility to obtain one
  • Residency in Psychiatry completed
  • Board certified or eligible in Psychiatry; certification required for retention
  • Additional training in community, crisis/ED, or addiction psychiatry preferred
Responsibilities
  • Clinical care: inpatient care, crisis intervention, management of severe mental illness, care for acutely suicidal patients, supervised medical detoxification; approximately 75% effort
  • Remaining 25%: crisis receiving center and outpatient services
  • Rotational work schedule, typically 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off, with call responsibilities
  • Team-oriented care, excellent time management, adaptability in fast-paced environments
  • Opportunities for research, presentations, publications, and community collaborations
Additional Activities
  • Scholarly activities including research and development of educational materials
  • Teaching and supervising learners (residents, students, fellows)
  • Administrative duties related to clinical care and service to departments and committees
