What Is an ABAP Consultant?

An ABAP Consultant is the technical delivery specialist within SAP project teams, responsible for converting business requirements into working, maintainable custom code built on SAP's proprietary Advanced Business Application Programming language. Day to day, the role centers on developing RICEFW objects - reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms, and workflows - while collaborating closely with functional consultants and business subject matter experts to validate that each solution matches what the client actually needs. Based on Lamwork's research across ABAP Consultant job data, this role consistently appears at the intersection of software engineering and client-facing consulting, making strong technical and communication skills equally important for success.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze functional specifications and business requirements to produce detailed technical design documents before coding begins.
  • Build RICEFW objects across SAP modules, including reports, interfaces, forms, and enhancement framework components, to fulfill approved technical designs.
  • Review code produced by team members against SAP development guidelines, identifying quality issues and ensuring standards compliance before handover.
  • Coordinate with functional consultants and business SMEs throughout each engagement phase to clarify requirements and confirm solution alignment.
  • Resolve production defects and performance bottlenecks by identifying root causes, applying targeted ABAP fixes, and documenting the resolution for future reference.
Required Skills
  • Hard Skills: ABAP Development, RICEFW Object Delivery, S/4HANA and ABAP for HANA, SAP Integration Technologies (IDocs, BAPIs, OData, Web Services), Performance Tuning and Debugging
  • Soft Skills: Analytical Thinking, Stakeholder Communication, Team Collaboration, Problem Solving, Adaptability
Career Progression
  • Junior SAP ABAP Developer
  • SAP ABAP Developer
