Austal USA in Mobile, AL is seeking a skilled B-Class Fitter to join our fabrication team. You will rig plates, fit structures, and ensure compliance with quality and safety standards on shipbuilding projects.

Ideal candidates hold an A-Class Fitter certification or equivalent and can read engineering drawings, shop manuals, and change orders. The role may include overtime and shift flexibility in a dynamic shipyard environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1 year as a B-Class Fitter at Austal or 2 years in a related industry.
  • Pass approved A-Class Fitter Test for Aluminum and/or steel.
  • Must demonstrate ability to interpret and work from construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer's handbooks, change order, and contract specifications.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, work processes and techniques used in measuring, and fitting of aluminum and/or steel components, modules and vessels.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology and weld joint details.
  • Ability to work any shift or overtime as required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform shipfitting functions: fit up of structure, cutting, sniping, sanding, grinding, gouging, back gouging.
  • Prepping and fit up of plates with minimal supervision.
  • Monitors working environment for quality and safety compliance.
  • Monitor heat/input parameters and adjust to welding procedures.
  • Must be willing to train lower-skilled workers.
  • May be assigned to shifts and additional tasks as required.

Job description

REPORTS TO: Fabrication Supervisor
SUPERVISES: N/A
AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Technically proficient in tasks, work processes, and equipment operation.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including the completion and signatures for work completion and quality.
  • Creates a working environment compliant with quality, safety, environmental, and health regulations and policies.
  • Rigs plates and equipment safely.
  • Understand directions and follow instructions.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization on assigned job sites.
  • Accountable for completion of daily work assignments including the completion and signatures for work completion and quality.
  • Performs safe and effective use of craft related tools and equipment, including but not limited to: milling discs, sanders, grinders, burr motors, band saws, skill saws, saws all, cutting torches, arc gougers, plate magnets, general fitting aids, come along and chain falls etc.
  • Obtain GMAW ABS 'B' Class Weld Certification for aluminum applications and/or FCAW/GMAW B class weld certification for steel applications.
  • Performs basic layout of plates, materials and weldments using basic engineering sketches, drawings, and diagrams with minimal supervision.
  • Performs shipfitting functions such as but not limited to fit up of structure, cutting, sniping, sanding, grinding, arc gouging and back gouging of steel welds through mechanical, flame, and ARC gouging processes, prepping, (Including paint removal in way of any weld), tacking and the fit up of plates with minimum supervision.
  • Performs fitting operations with limited supervision using standard shipfitting equipment to accomplish fabrication and ship repair duties.
  • Monitors working environment for compliance with quality, safety, environmental and health regulations.
  • Monitor steel preheat, inner pass temps, heat input, and ensure that all are within the parameters of the applicable steel welding procedure.
  • Monitor steel heat distortion and apply appropriate changes to counteract.
  • Monitor heat shrinkage during the fit and weld process and apply appropriate changes to control the shrinkage.
  • Must be willing to work with and train lower-skilled workers.
  • May be assigned to work any shift.
  • May be assigned additional tasks including outside the craft as required.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
  • Minimum 1 year as a B-Class Fitter at Austal or 2 years in a related industry required.
  • Pass approved A-Class Fitter Test for Aluminum and/or steel.
  • Must demonstrate an acceptable proficiency and competency to Austal Supervision for an A-Class Fitters position.
  • Must demonstrate ability to interpret and work from construction drawings, job specifications, instruction manuals, manufacturer's handbooks, change order, and contract specifications.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment, work processes and techniques used in measuring, and fitting of aluminum and/or steel components, modules and vessels.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and measure using the metric system.
  • Knowledge of shipyard terminology such as general ship structure and vessel layout.
  • Knowledge of edge preparation and weld joint details.
  • Advanced working knowledge of engineering drawings and sketches.
  • Ability to work any shift or overtime as required by management, schedule must be flexible.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:
  • Candidates must meet the following employment eligibility guidelines to be considered for employment with Austal USA:
  • 18 years of age or older at time of application
  • Able to provide proof of US Person Status
  • No felony convictions of Theft/Deception or Violent crimes within seven years from disposition date
  • No felony convictions of Drug crimes within three years from disposition date
