Job Description
High School Teacher — Ewing Marion Kauffman School (Kansas City, MO)

The Ewing Marion Kauffman School is a free, public charter school serving 5th–12th graders with a mission to create college graduates. EMKS seeks results-driven, culturally responsive educators to join our team. We anchor our work around four guiding principles:

  • Belief and Connection: Hold high expectations for every student while building strong relationships; never allow identity or bias to lower standards.
  • Clear is Kind: Communicate high expectations directly and teach students how to navigate systems and norms they may not yet know.
  • Intent and Impact: Act with purpose to empower students, continually assess the impact of practices, and adjust as needed.
  • Cultural Context + Critical Thinking: Deliver rigorous, culturally responsive learning that pushes students to think critically and engage with their world.

Position: High School Teacher (Grades 9-12) — Math, Science, English, History, AP and Dual Credit Courses and Specials (Language, Fitness, Art, Music)

Because we are a growing charter network, we hire teachers who can teach across grades and content; grade-level and content preferences will be discussed during the interview process and flexibility is valued.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and adapt curriculum aligned to state and Common Core standards.
  • Design formative and summative assessments; use data to refine instruction and interventions.
  • Maximize instructional time with urgency and purpose.
  • Collaborate with content and grade-level teams to promote critical thinking and academic rigor.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning profiles and keep all students engaged and challenged.
  • Deliver instruction with passion and a "whatever it takes" mindset to help students succeed.
  • Build strong, authentic relationships with students and model the school’s PREP values (Perseverance, Results, Empathy, Passion).
  • Uphold consistent behavioral systems and school-wide expectations.
  • Embrace feedback, engage in continuous improvement, and take on additional responsibilities as assigned by the Principal.
Desired Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
  • Teaching experience or leadership in a high-performing charter, district, or independent school preferred.
  • Experience working with students in urban or public charter settings (student teaching, after-school, camps, etc.).
  • Eligible for or holding state teaching certification/licensure for middle school.
  • Deep commitment to Kauffman's mission and to closing the achievement gap.
  • Personal qualities: maturity, humility, strong work ethic, resilience, responsiveness to feedback, attention to detail, and entrepreneurial energy.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure and to act strategically while managing competing demands.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive health benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • 403B plan as well as employer match available up to 4%
  • Part of the KCPSRS retirement system
  • Paid time off and school holidays
  • Paid parental leave available
  • Professional development and growth opportunities
