Position Overview

Special Education Assistant – 0.875 FTE, Pay Grade 7, starting wage $19.77/hr. Position located at Houston Middle School (High‑Needs) in the Matanuska‑Susitna Borough School District. Closing Date 12/18/2025.

Responsibilities
  • Assist Special Education instructors in planning and implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
  • Provide teaching assistance to individual students and small groups in a variety of educational areas; monitor student performance and provide information.
  • Enter student IEP data into a computer system, prepare and return materials for classroom use, and organize classroom supplies and bulletin boards.
  • Provide attendant care for emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disrupted students throughout the school day, including monitoring activities, safety, feeding, dressing, and toileting needs.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as scheduling parent conferences, school nurse visits, and making phone contacts with parents (per supervisory direction).
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including proctoring detentions, picking up prescriptions, and accompanying students to therapy sessions or jobs.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • Highly Qualified paraprofessional: high school diploma or GED + two years of college credits or an associate’s degree, or passage of the Para Pro Assessment and Checklist.
  • Valid Alaska Driver’s License.
  • Previous experience providing attendant care in an emotionally disturbed/behaviorally disordered environment (minimum six months).
  • Strong communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
Physical & Lifting Requirements
  • Stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl regularly; use hand strength to grasp supplies and testing material.
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 40 lbs (hand‑strength to grasp items such as classroom supplies or a wheelchair).
  • Vision: close, distance, and depth perception required.
Health & Safety

All applicants who receive a conditional offer must complete a medical examination and the WorkSTEPS evaluation program at least three days before the start date. Successful completion of the program is required to be hired.
