Welcome to Indian River School

Located in rural West Canaan, Indian River School serves 363 students in grades 5-8.Indian River is a member of the New England League of Middle Schools, and is currently in Year 1 of a three year improvement program. The hope is to become a NELMS Spotlight School in 2021. To meet that goal, Indian River teachers are involved with Co‑teaching, PBIS, Instructional Rounds and Understanding by Design.A Three‑Tier Reading Intervention program has been in place at IRS since 2010, and recently an intervention period was added to the day. This period gives teachers an opportunity to offer intervention to challenged students and enrichment to soaring students.IRS is currently working on a 1 to 1 Chromebook program. All students in grades 7 and 8 have their own Chromebook, and over the next two years the program will filter down to students in grades 5 and 6. This program has helped make the integration of technology into classrooms, and several very interesting projects, possible. At IRS, students have opportunities to participate in student council, math team, history club, robotics, jazz band, drama, Select Singers, baseball, softball, soccer, basketball, field hockey, cross country skiing, cross country running, astronomy club, Destination Imagination, Outdoor Leadership Education with Dartmouth students, Helping Hands, Careers CLIC job shadowing, and Leaders in Prevention.Community Partners provide many opportunities for IRS students. We are grateful to Friends of Mascoma, Byrne Foundation, Walker Foundation, Mascoma Savings Bank, Careers CLIC and the Wellborne Foundation for providing grants, professional development and expert advice in developing place-based science opportunities, quality guest speakers, and career experiences for our students.
