Job Description

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Secondary English or Social Studies field.

Pre-Requisite: Active Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) issued IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.

Reports to: Dean of Instruction, Grd 7-12

Primary Purpose

The Jr. High/High School Social Studies Instructor focuses on literature and creating an engaging classroom culture aimed at preparing students for real-world experiences. The role involves motivating and inspiring students, emphasizing reading, literature, composition, and critical thinking skills. Teachers employ various instructional strategies to prioritize discussion, promote a passion for literature, and develop strong voice and agency within students. The Jr. High/High School Social Studies Instructor will integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with Social Studies to create relevant learning experiences for students. This position includes collaboration with colleagues to develop and implement an integrated STEM curriculum which fosters critical thinking about careers in STEM fields. Management reserves the right to modify and assign duties as needed.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Prepare coursework to teach students required Social Studies classes in accordance with Arizona Standards.
  • Deliver effective and differentiated instruction, utilizing various teaching methodologies and technologies to cater to diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Create a classroom environment that promotes student participation, critical thinking, and a love for learning.
  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that integrate STEM principles with Social Studies content.
  • Design and facilitate interdisciplinary projects that require students to apply their knowledge to the possibilities in STEM fields to solve problems and explore complex issues.
  • Assess student learning through a variety of methods, including projects, presentations, and assessments, providing constructive feedback to promote growth.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student participation, critical thinking, and collaboration.
  • Stay updated on current research, best practices, and emerging trends in STEM education and Social Studies to continuously improve teaching practices.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and parents to support student learning and promote a school-wide culture of STEM integrated Social Studies.
  • Help students connect classroom learning to real-world situations and issues, fostering an understanding of the relevance of Social Studies and STEM in their lives.
  • Keep accurate attendance and grade records in accordance with school policies and administrative regulations.
  • Communicate regularly with colleagues regarding classroom instruction and student needs.
  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.
  • Know and effectively communicate the school's educational philosophy and mission.
  • Create and manage a responsive learning environment that enables students to feel safe, to be creative, and to develop to their full potential.
  • Implement procedures, systems, and routines that provide structure for students.
  • Ensure smooth operation of all classroom instructional functions.
  • Organize and supervise approved field trips.
  • Conduct parent-teacher conferences.
  • Establish high expectations for academic success and classroom behavior.
  • Assist in the supervision of student breaks.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Instruction.
Requirements
  • Previous teaching experience in high school Social Studies.
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills, and ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Familiarity with educational technology and software.
  • May be involved in extracurricular activities, such as coaching sports teams or advising clubs.
  • Complete required paperwork related to Social Studies student progress, assessments, and other administrative tasks.
  • All other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Dean of Instruction.
