Job summary

Overland Contracting Inc. is seeking an entry‑level Laborer Apprentice 1 (Civil) to join our team on a full‑time basis.

The role focuses on learning through classroom and on‑the‑job training while assisting Civil Journeymen with forms, embeds, rebar and anchor bolt installation per project plans. You will work with skilled professionals on critical infrastructure projects, emphasizing safety, quality workmanship and adherence to plans and industry standards while developing hands‑on skills

Qualifications

• 0-6 months of experience or 0–1000 hours working as a carpenter or similar civil craft.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• All applicants must complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (background check, drug screen, MVR where applicable).

Responsibilities

• Use hand and power tools to form, rebar and anchor bolts per plans.
• Assist in planning, layout and installation of cement structures following codes and specs.
• Support safety programs and report hazards or incidents to supervision.
• Participate in pre-job planning and safety briefings to identify and mitigate hazards.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications to execute work.
• Coordinate with other crafts and crews to align with project schedules.
• Mentor fellow apprentices and contribute to on-the-job training.

Job Summary

Apprentice will receive classroom and on the job training for Construction Laborer Civil.

Shadow and assist Civil Journeyman in the planning, lay‑out and installation of forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts for installation of concrete structures in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Use appropriate hand (i.e. hammer, pliers) and power tools (i.e. skill saw, concrete vibrator) to properly measure, cut, assemble and install forms, rebar, embeds and anchor bolts; construct built‑in‑place or prefabricated wooden forms, according to specifications for molding concrete structures; erect built‑in‑place forms or assemble and install prefabricated forms; insert spreaders and tie‑rods between opposite pieces to maintain specific dimensions; anchor and brace forms to fixed objects using nails, bolts, anchor rods, steel cables, planks and timber; build wooden structures such as scaffold supports and supports, and frame shelters according to specifications and project specifications; pour concrete into finished forms to specified textures; vibrate, level, smooth and shape surface of concrete; finish concrete surfaces to specifications; remove rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces using power grinder or chisel and hammer and patch holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound; and install all other items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications.
• Participate in all safety related processes and programs as requested. Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries. Understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised. Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional. If needed, use your stop work authority until the issue is resolved.
• Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
• Participate in all pre‑job work planning and safety discussions. Identify safety hazards you or other employees may be subject to and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards.
• Understand and respond appropriately to all safety hazards and warning devices (i.e. back‑up alarms, smell of smoke, different colored warning tags, warning sirens).
• Understand, support, and follow lockout tag out procedures. Attend site specific training and assure you follow all procedures as out lined in training.
• Follow established safety rules and regulations and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
• Use effective verbal and written communication skills. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and fractions rapidly and accurately.
• Listen to co‑workers suggestions, safety concerns, and recommendations giving full attention to what they are saying and take the time to understand the points being made, asking questions and providing feedback when appropriate.
• Coordinate work with other crafts and co‑workers on the job.
• Actively participate in on‑the‑job training and mentoring opportunities with co‑workers in your craft when provided.
• Produce quality work, meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards.
• Learn to read and understand plans and specifications. Visualize two dimensional drawings in three dimensions.
• With regard to that portion of the work assigned, develop complete understanding of contract plans and specifications and plan, lay‑out, diagram, and install equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

0-6 months of experience or 0 – 1000 hours working as a carpenter or similar civil craft. Develop a knowledge of auto‑level and transit for accurate lay‑out and verification of finished grades, fabrication and erection of forms with thorough knowledge of steel framed forms (i.e. Symons); fabrication and placement of rebar including proper tying techniques; and placing, finishing and sealing concrete. In addition, must have all necessary tools (see Industrial Carpenter tool list). Must be at least 18 years of age.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

WORK CONDITIONS

• Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, Kneel, Bend, Stoop, Move in and around confined and cluttered places, and uneven areas, see and hear naturally or with correction.
• Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with requirements of the job duties.
• Requires using hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls according to a set procedure.
• Requires repetitive movement.
• Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
• Work up to a 12-hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and other outside conditions.
• Requires extensive walking throughout shift.

• Requires working in cramped workspaces and getting into awkward positions.
