Job summary

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a part-time Lifeguard for 4-H Camp Shehaqua at Hickory Run State Park, White Haven, PA. The role focuses on overseeing waterfront activities, enforcing safety protocols, and delivering engaging aquatic programming.

The position requires Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certifications, First Aid/CPR, and prior lifeguard experience. Camp week is July 13-17, 2026, with room and board provided and Sunday-Thursday schedule.

Qualifications

• Must be 21 years old for a Senior Lifeguard and 18 years old for a Junior Lifeguard.
• Current Red Cross Lifeguard certification
• First Aid/CPR required
• Current Water Safety Instructor certification
• Minimum one year experience as certified lifeguard

Responsibilities

• Lead and supervise all aquatic activities at camp's pool and waterfront area
• Inventory and maintain equipment used in pool area
• Initiate a water safety program in accordance with American Camping Association standards and Red Cross requirements
• Follow established policies and procedures for pool area
• Train camp staff to assist in emergency situations
• Test and classify camp swimmers and assign staff to tend to swimmers needing assistance
• Create new ideas that will improve the aquatics programming at camp
• Prevent incidents from occurring by maintaining proper control over pool facility
• Be able to recognize victims in distress, activities which may put swimmers at risk and physical hazards which could injure swimmers
• Provide a safe environment for all staff and campers while at the waterfront
• Provide engaging waterfront focused activities
• Attend all required meetings and trainings
• Act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of campers in the event of emergency
• Responsible for first aid and rescue equipment to be at the pool area and available
• Responsible for assisting camp staff in emergency procedures
• Perform evaluation of program at end of season and ideas for next season

Position requires excellent organizational and time management skills and the ability to work independently.Must be a team player who can work with diverse youth and adults.The candidate must be able to be able to carry equipment and supplies, with or without accommodation.

Work Location:
4-H Camp Shehaqua - Hickory Run State Park, White Haven PA - Luzerne County

Camp week is July 13-17, 2026. Work schedule will usually be Tuesday morning through Thursday afternoon. Daily hours will depend on swim times needed during the week.

This is a part-time wage appointment at $15/hour for actual guarding time. Room and board are provided during the camp week. The individual will be responsible to the camp directors.
