Construction Material Testing seeks a trained-operator 3D scanning technician to run handheld scanners (Artec Leo, Eva, or Space Spider) on real projects. You will capture data on site, process it in Artec Studio, and deliver scan-to-CAD outputs to clients, with travel to regional hubs as required.
You should have hands-on scanner experience, CAD-reading ability, and a valid driver's license. The role is hourly with potential overtime, and sponsorship for certifications is available.
3D scanning technicians run the Artec Leo for our handheld scanning line. One day you are scanning a rebar mat and anchor bolt cluster before a pour, the next a corroded pipe spool at a Ship Channel plant, a cracked beam for an insurance adjuster, or a worn impeller a machine shop needs rebuilt in CAD. You capture the data, check it on site, process it in Artec Studio, and deliver meshes, point clouds, measurement reports, and scan-to-CAD files the client can act on. This is a trained-operator position: you have run a handheld structured-light or laser scanner and processed the data before, and you can show us the work.
Monday you are on an elevated slab in the Energy Corridor an hour before the pour, scanning the mat, the embeds, and the anchor bolt templates while the special inspector finishes the walk, then back at the office overlaying the scan on the structural drawings so the superintendent has the out-of-tolerance list before the trucks line up. Tuesday is a dig site east of Baytown: a cleaned pipe surface, an open excavation, and a corrosion map that has to be finished before the coating crew closes it up. Later in the week a machine shop drops off a worn impeller with no drawing, an adjuster asks for a cracked parking garage beam to be scanned before the shoring goes in, and a modular builder in Conroe wants the as-built of a container unit captured before it ships Friday. Every one of those jobs ends the same way: data checked on site, processed in Artec Studio, and delivered in a format the client opens without calling us.
You arrive knowing how to run a handheld scanner; we train you on our capture procedures for each service, our drift-control method for container-size objects, our report templates, and the construction and plant context the scans live in. Technicians who want the construction side pick up ACI Concrete Field Testing Grade I and ICC special inspector certifications, paid for by the company, so the pre-pour scan and the special inspection can be one visit. Technicians who want the industrial side move toward coatings inspection (AMPP CIP) and metrology reporting. This is a new service line and the people who build it will run it. The path is scanning technician to lead technician, then to a regional scanning role at one of our hubs or into project management as the line grows.
Pay runs $26 to $40 per hour depending on demonstrated scanning and processing skill, CAD ability, and certifications held; the position is hourly with overtime when pours and plant windows run long. Houston-area work dispatches from our Sugar Land headquarters and covers the metro and the Gulf Coast plants. Projects elsewhere are staffed through our regional hubs on a project basis, with travel and per-diem arrangements set out before you commit to a trip. The scanner flies as carry-on, and so do you; expect some weeks on the road when a fabrication yard or plant program in another state is running.
You will work on active jobsites and inside operating plants under their permit, escort, and lockout rules, with the site safety orientation and personal protective equipment each one requires. Forensic matters add a chain-of-custody discipline: every capture is logged with equipment, settings, and procedure so the person who took the scan can describe it under oath. Scan accuracy is stated on every deliverable, not assumed from the brochure. Reports against drawings use the tolerance the specification actually calls for — ACI 117 for rebar placement, AISC and AWS for fabricated steel, the client's own tolerance for fit-up — and the quality system that backs our materials testing reports backs these too.
The role requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable record, the ability to carry and operate scanning equipment on active jobsites and in plants, and pre-employment screening consistent with jobsite and client requirements.
We are an equal opportunity employer. Every applicant is considered without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or veteran status. What we care about is whether the scan is complete, the number is right, and the client can open the file.
