Policy Interpretation and Implementation

Our community has resident care aides to assist the residents within our community that are functionally, physically, and/or socially impaired and require 24-hour supervision.

Duties and responsibilities:
  • 1. Adheres to and conveys a philosophy that supports dignity, privacy, independence, choice, and individuality of residents.
  • 2. Reviews resident Plan of Care and staff task lists as needed to gain and maintain a familiarity with the resident’s service needs and preferences.
  • 3. Make “rounds” at the beginning and ending of each shift with on-coming personal aide staff. Periodic “rounds” during the shift to monitor resident condition/needs. This includes laying eyes upon each resident in our facility as the employee coming on shift is taking on the responsibility of those residents.
  • 3. Reviews the Staff Communication Log and corresponding resident nursing notes on a daily basis for information about changes in resident service needs and/or health conditions.
  • 4. Provides personal services to residents as assigned and according to the Plan of Care. These services include activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, toileting, eating, and ambulation. Other personal services include assistance activities, making calls via telephone, adaptive devices like hearing aids, eyeglasses, contact lens, artificial limbs, etc.
  • 5. Responds to the call bell system in a respectful, timely manner.
  • 6. Demonstrates knowledge of infection control policy and procedures by following and adhering to infection control practices.
  • 7. Assists in maintaining a clean, comfortable and safe environment by providing housekeeping services daily and as needed. These tasks include making residents beds, changing bed linens according to bath days, emptying trash, sweeping/mopping/vacuuming, maintaining organization with work areas and resident rooms, and reducing clutter within resident rooms.
  • 8. Assists with individual resident and social group and recreational activities as requested; encourages resident participation in facility activities.
  • 9. Monitors changes in resident needs, preferences, and health status. These changes include physical conditions and cognitive/emotional status. Report these changes to the SIC, Coordinator, and Facility Nurse as well as documenting the observed changes in the resident nursing notes.
  • 10. Obtain necessary PHI and appropriate documentation in the resident medical records while upholding HIPPA rules and regulations during access to these files.
  • 11. Attends and participates in the QI program committee meetings as requested.
  • 12. Works effectively within a team member setting.
  • 13. Responds quickly to emergency situations within the facility. Facilitating outside emergency service personnel and documenting any incidents or accidents that occur with residents in the nursing notes.
  • 14. Performs all other duties as assigned, as this facility expects employees to promote an atmosphere of teamwork with other associates as well as hospitality and comfort for its residents. Therefore the list of duties indicated above, are not all-inclusive.
Qualifications

Working conditions:

  • 15. Assigned residents will be designated within the facility at the beginning of each shift to indicate the residents each personal care aide will be responsible for caring for while on duty. Assistance may be required from a fellow aide to complete certain tasks that are not on daily assignment.
  • 16. Collaborative teamwork is required.
  • 17. This position will have designated area for proper documentation of assigned residents.
  • 18. Exposure risk for residents with communicable diseases and confused residents that may become physically, verbally aggressive or combative.
  • 19. This position is at risk for exposure to blood and body fluids due to extensive assistance that may be necessary for properly providing ADL care to residents. Essential infection control measures should be implemented at all times for preventative measures.
Educational requirements:
  • 20. Must possess the ability to communication verbally, with the ability to read, write, and understand English.
  • 21. High school diploma or equivalent of a GED is required.
  • 22. Active Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Personal Care Aide by the state of North Carolina. If inactive status or in-training program, employee is required to obtain certification of CNA or PCA within 6 months of hire date.
  • 23. Maintain and provide supporting evidence to business office of the 12 hours relevant continuing education credit hours required by the state yearly.
Experience:
  • 24. 1-2 years of prior experience working with elderly preferred.
  • 25. Work experience in Assisted Living Facility, Long Term Care, or Home Health Care preferred.
  • 26. Experience with providing assistance with ADL’s and the DMA PCS process, a plus.
Specific requirements:
  • 27. Must be 18 years of age or older
  • 28. CPR certification desired
  • 29. Must be able to work flexible hours and participate in holiday activities.
  • 30. Must have a 2-step PPD for screening of Tuberculosis; submit a copy of the 1st step results on the first day of orientation.
  • 31. Successful completion of a drug screening and clear criminal record.
  • 32. Work as scheduled and as needed during call-outs or emergency situations. Assist with coverage of shift when conflicts with personal responsibilities occur. Participation and ensuring appropriate staffing in bad weather situations.
Physical and sensory requirements:
  • 33. Ability to regularly lift up to 50 lbs., with occasions of lifting up to 100 lbs., and spending long periods of time walking and standing.
  • 34. Must be able to lift, stand, carry, bend, squat, reach, and kneel using proper body mechanics.
  • 35. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability in order to cope with the physical, emotional, and mental stress of the position.
  • 36. Function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and supporting agencies.
  • 37. Assist with the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
  • 38. Orientation to include 6-hours of Dementia training. Completion of total 20-hour Dementia training within 6 months of hire.
Acknowledgments:
  • 39. Encourage residents and families to participate in individualized care plans and community activities.
Job position analysis information:
  • 40. Attendance of required meetings and training, with a minimum of 12 continuing education requirements per calendar year related to ALF as required by the state.

Job performance evaluation will be conducted 90 days after hire date and annually performance and competency evaluations thereafter. These evaluations will be the responsibility Department Supervisors or Administrator. Each employee is required to read and sign a copy of his/her respective job description prior to performing assigned tasks. The employee will receive a copy of his/her job description, and the signed copy will be filed in the employee’s personnel record. Each employee is expected (and required) to perform the essential functions outlined on his/her individual job description. Any refusal or willful violation regarding the performance of such duties may result in disciplinary action.
