Job Summary

A teacher in the School District of Philadelphia plans, organizes, and teaches their subject area following the scope and sequence for all courses; provides instruction in a variety of planned courses; uses real‑life applications and simulations to help students analyze and interpret material; and incorporates tools, processes, and technology—including pertinent software—to develop lessons and assessments.

Essential Functions
  • Assesses student skill levels and aligns classroom goals and activities to state and local standards.
  • Provides instruction in their subject area, emphasizing real‑life applications and simulations.
  • Teaches inquiry techniques that encourage experimentation and alternative problem‑solving approaches.
  • Applies technical expertise with tools, materials, processes, and technology, including relevant software.
  • Designs learning experiences that require students to demonstrate comprehension and use technology to solve problems.
  • Encourages students to use learned skills as tools for inquiry‑based learning.
  • Creates a classroom environment that offers subject‑related materials addressing student needs and interests.
  • Collaborates with staff across disciplines to integrate subject‑specific skills throughout the curriculum.
  • Stays abreast of the latest educational developments that affect instructional programs.
  • Attends faculty meetings to discuss school problems and teaching methods.
  • Maintains classroom discipline and keeps accurate attendance, grade, and record logs.
Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

Certificates/Licenses
  • Valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Instructional Certificate in the required grade level and endorsements in the relevant subject area.
  • Or meets requirements to obtain an emergency permit and consistently satisfies permit requirements until instructional certification is issued.

  • Principles, practices, and methods of grade‑level education.
  • Subject‑specific expertise.
  • Contents, materials, methodologies, and practices used at the respective grade level.
  • Critical‑thinking methodologies and problem‑solving techniques.

Demonstrated Ability To
  • Assess students’ needs and learning styles to design differentiated instruction.

  • Facilitate inquiry‑based learning at the whole‑class, small‑group, and individual levels.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, administrators, supportive staff, parents, and students.
