Job Description
Position Overview

The School Safety Officer (SSO) will work under the direction of the Division Superintendent, Director of Technology, Supervisor of School Safety, while under the direct supervision of school Principals and Assistant Principals. The SSO plays a vital role in fostering a safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. While adhering to established policies and procedures, the SSO is expected to be vigilant in working to enhance the safety and security of the school while maintaining an approachable presence on campus.

Key Responsibilities
  • Campus Security & Monitoring: Patrol school buildings, grounds, and parking lots to deter misconduct, prevent unauthorized access, and ensure all security measures are being followed and functioning properly.
  • Collaboration: Work with school administration and other school personnel to support positive and safe school climates.
  • Emergency Response: Act as a first responder during crises, medical emergencies, fires, or natural disasters, following established emergency protocols and guiding students/staff to safety.
  • Visitor Management: Monitor school entrance points, verify visitor credentials, and ensure everyone on campus is properly checked in. Take appropriate action to assist/escort unauthorized or unruly persons from school grounds.
  • De-escalation & Mediation: Intervene in student conflicts or disruptive behavior using restorative practices and verbal de-escalation techniques before situations escalate. At the direction of school administrators, escort disruptive students to locations specified.
  • Community Engagement: Build positive, trusting relationships with students, staff, and parents to encourage a culture of shared safety and open communication. Provides security for after‑school, evening, sporting and/or weekend events/activities on an assigned, flexible schedule as assigned by the building administration.
  • Reporting & Documentation: Maintain detailed, accurate logs of daily activities, security incidents, and property damage, reporting findings to school administration.
  • Safety Drills: Assist administration in planning, conducting, and evaluating routine safety drills (e.g., fire, lockdown, severe weather).
  • Other Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Sixteen hours of training with professional training from DCJS (preferred); must complete training within 60 days of initial hire date. This training component includes, but is not limited to, Non‑violent Crisis Intervention training.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in security, law enforcement, military, or a youth‑facing safety role.
  • Active certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to interact positively with diverse student populations.
  • Ability to remain calm, resourceful, and decisive under high‑stress conditions.
  • Ability to write summary reports of security incidents or breaches of established rules and procedures.
  • Focused on building positive relationships, communication skills, crisis de‑escalation and physical intervention for safety.
  • Awareness of rules and regulations of Wise County Public Schools, including the Student Code of Conduct.
Preferred
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or formal de‑escalation training.
  • Knowledge of local and state laws regarding school safety and juvenile justice.
  • Current or Retired Law Enforcement Officer with School Resource Officer experience.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to run, climb stairs, and physically intervene in conflicts if necessary to ensure safety.
  • Comfort working in various weather conditions (outdoor patrol during arrival, dismissal, and recess).
  • May involve the possibility of physical injury from trespassers and/or students with weapons.
  • Good physical condition with the ability to lift/move greater than 40lbs.
