Job Description

SCHOOL DISTRICT OF WAKULLA COUNTY

SCHOOL GUARDIAN JOB DESCRIPTION QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school diploma required, associate degree in a related field preferred.
2. Preferred: Three years of experience as a sworn law enforcement or corrections officer in good standing within the past ten years. Alternatively, two years of military or reservist service with an honorable discharge may substitute for law enforcement experience. Experience working in K-12 law enforcement is also valuable.
3. A valid driver's license is required and must be kept up to date.
4. Applicants must be at least 21 years old to obtain a concealed weapons permit in Florida.
5. Successful completion of the following requirements:
   
   1. Hold a valid license issued under Section 790.06, F.S., (License to carry concealed weapon or firearm).
   2. One hundred thirty-two (132) hours of comprehensive firearm safety and proficiency training conducted by Criminal Justice Standards and Commission-Certified instructors.
   3. Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a psychologist licensed under Chapter 490, F.S., and designated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
   4. Pass an initial drug test and subsequent random drug tests in accordance with the requirements of Section 112.0455, F.S.
   5. At least twelve (12) hours of a certified nationally recognized diversity training program.
   6. Pass physical, hearing, and vision exam as reflected below under physical demands.
6. Successful completion of initial and ongoing training provided by the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office as required by Chapter 2018-3, Laws of Florida.
7. Complete trauma-informed care and youth mental health first aid training within six months of hire.
8. Qualifications may differ as the Superintendent and the School Board see fit to ensure each specialist position is staffed with qualified personnel.

7. Must gather relevant information through observation, interviews, and social media, and report findings clearly and promptly.
8. Should respond effectively to both community members and colleagues within the organization.
9. Needs familiarity with small office equipment and computers.

Performance Responsibilities

1. Serve as an active member of both the school's security and threat assessment teams, prioritizing the protection of students, staff, and visitors from potential threats on school premises.
2. Prevent and identify threatening activities while assigned to school-related tasks.
3. Respond promptly and decisively to neutralize any active assailant threats.
4. Employ appropriate force, as necessary, to stop, deter, or eliminate physical dangers to students, staff, and visitors within school property.
5. Conduct thorough perimeter and interior assessments to secure all areas of the campus.
6. Collaborate effectively with school administrators and designated staff to address security and safety concerns.
7. Prepare comprehensive incident reports documenting relevant events.
8. Support school safety drills under administrative supervision.
9. Assist the District and act as its representative during emergency shelter operations, when required.
10. Facilitate traffic management during student arrival and dismissal periods.
11. Work cooperatively with law enforcement and school personnel to identify, deter, mitigate, and participate in the prosecution of individuals impacting campus safety.
12. Properly operate and maintain issued firearms and communication equipment, as well as other department-issued gear.
13. Partner with school leaders to cultivate and sustain positive relationships with students and staff, promoting collaborative efforts to enhance safety throughout the Wakulla County School District.
14. Monitor student activity across various environments—including restrooms, grounds, hallways, media centers, cafeterias, and parking lots—to ensure their welfare and security.
15. Prepare diverse documents for accurate record-keeping, reference, and information distribution.
16. Utilize technology to access pertinent data and generate precise, detailed reports.
17. Participate in ongoing safety training and related activities throughout the academic year.
18. Cooperate fully with Principals, Assistant Principals, and other personnel in all safety initiatives.
19. Collaborate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, as well as first responders, by participating in requisite training programs.
20. Engage with entities such as The Office of the State Attorney, Department of Children and Families, and additional agencies in support of public safety objectives.
21. Remain vigilant and responsive to potential disturbances or violations of law and School Board Policy, implementing proactive security measures.
22. Maintain current knowledge of processes and procedures relevant to the school Safety Program through continued education and training opportunities.
23. Secure, retain, and properly manage departmental equipment and supplies, including weapons and specialized items, preventing loss or unauthorized usage.
24. Provide necessary support during school and District emergencies and fully participate in all mandated emergency drills (e.g., fire, lockdown, active shooter, hostage situations).
25. Sustain high levels of alertness and mobility, ensuring swift evaluation and response to critical incidents.
26. Demonstrate exemplary communication skills in interactions with students, staff, and visitors.
27. Comply with and advocate for the district’s equal employment and non-discrimination policies in all professional activities.
28. Attend training sessions designed to improve proficiency and effectiveness, including those focused on interactions with ESE and special needs students.
29. Successfully complete annual training, weapon inspections, and firearm qualifications in accordance with the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.
30. Regularly review literature and technical resources relevant to role responsibilities.
31. Ensure full compliance with established safety rules and protocols.
32. Adhere strictly to federal and state regulations, as well as School Board Policies.
33. Adapt work schedule to meet operational requirements and District needs.
34. Report communications with external agencies to school administration.
35. Serve as a liaison to School Resource Officers.
36. Perform additional duties as assigned.
37. Requires the use of a personal cell phone for job duties.

Physical Requirements

Heavy Work: Requires lifting to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. The job is highly physically demanding and involves abilities such as climbing, crawling, running, crouching, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, pulling, pushing, speaking, standing, visual acuity, and walking. Tasks may include long periods of standing, sitting, or walking. Minimum vision should be corrected to 20/30 and normal hearing at fifteen feet.

Terms of Employment

Ten months, 7.5 hours per day.

Salary to be based on the Board Adopted Salary Schedule.

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the designated supervisor in accordance with the Board policy for evaluation of non-instructional personnel.
