Job summary

Blackstone Valley Prep Mayoral Academy seeks a Junior High School Science Teacher to deliver science instruction aligned with Next Generation Science Standards. You will cultivate inquiry, foster respect and inclusion, and collaborate with colleagues for planning and reflective practice.

You will establish routines, communicate clear expectations, and challenge scholars with meaningful, scaffolded tasks while using assessments to drive instruction and student growth.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree is required and RI teacher certification by hire.
• Two years teaching experience in a diverse public school setting preferred.
• Bilingual candidates preferred.
• RI certification reciprocity with other states is available; CPI certification is listed as required.

Responsibilities

• Utilize NGSS to deliver cross-cutting science lessons (physical, earth/space, life, engineering).
• Foster an environment of respect and rapport with scholars and families.
• Collaborate with team on planning and reflective practice.
• Establish routines and procedures for smooth classroom operation and time management.
• Use language precisely to communicate learning expectations and directions.
• Engage scholars with higher-order thinking through well-designed tasks and scaffolding.
• Use formative and summative assessments to guide instruction and student self-monitoring.

In addition, Junior High School Science Teachers are expected to:

• Utilize Next Generation Science Standards to deliver cross-cutting lessons in physical science, earth and space science, life science, and engineering
• Encourage and develop scholars’ use of scientific inquiry to understand core concepts
• Create an environment of respect and rapport
• Collaborate with team members for planning and reflective practice
• Establish a culture of learning that reflects the educational importance of the work undertaken by both scholars and teachers
• Establish and monitor routines and procedures for the smooth operation of the classroom and the efficient use of time, and the engagement with learning
• Model a precise and expressive use of language to effectively communicate with scholars, including: expectations for learning, directions for activities, and explanations of content
• Use questions, prompts, and discussion techniques to cognitively challenge scholars, advance high-level thinking and discourse, and promote metacognition
• Intellectually engage all scholars in learning through well-designed learning tasks and activities that require complex thinking, and include appropriate scaffolding
• Utilize formative and summative assessments to drive instructional planning, monitor scholar learning, provide feedback to scholars, and facilitate scholars’ self-monitoring of learning

Qualifications

• A minimum of two years teaching experience in a diverse public school setting preferred, but not required
• Bilingual candidates preferred, but not required
• A bachelor’s degree is required
