Job summary

Hilcorp in Houston seeks a geologist to interpret and integrate subsurface data to identify economically viable oil and gas opportunities. You will develop maps, cross sections and displays defining structure, reservoir geometry and hydrocarbon potential.

Responsibilities include using geologic databases and mapping tools, interpreting logs and seismic data, and coordinating on-site open-hole evaluations with service vendors. Bachelor's in geology required; Master’s preferred.

Job Objective

Interprets, integrates, and evaluates subsurface geologic data to develop economic oil and gas investment opportunities for the company.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Interprets and evaluates subsurface geologic data to construct integrated maps, cross sections, and other geologic displays defining subsurface structure, reservoir geometries, net sand and pay, hydrocarbon pore volume and other essential economically significant interpretations.
  • Obtains, manipulates, and interprets computer databases and mapping programs consistent with established company mapping standards.
  • Obtains and interprets well log correlation and interpretation, petrophysical analysis, interpretation of seismic data, field specific geologic interpretation of known producing traps and trap types, structure and producing intervals to define drilling, recompletion, and workover economic objectives.
  • Supervises and performs on-site open hole well-site geologic evaluations. Coordinates open-hole evaluation tools and service company vendors.
  • Assesses the potential and economic viability of external generated proposals for the company. Presents geologic work to obtain external capital resources.
  • Maintains employee confidence and protects corporate assets, including intellectual property, by keeping information confidential.
  • Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional associations.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks and contributing to goals as needed.
  • Adheres to the company's values - integrity, ownership, urgency, alignment and innovation.
  • Supports company vision and mission.
  • Adheres to established work schedule, attendance standards and is punctual to work and meetings.
  • Other duties assigned by management.
Qualifications
  • Zero (0) to two (2) year minimum experience in geological oil and gas development and/or exploration.
  • High-level proficiency with onsite open hole evaluation and problem solving. Working knowledge and some practical experience of the role and job responsibilities of Reservoir and Operation Engineers, Landmen, and other company professionals in order to accomplish team goals.
  • Ability to integrate and synthesize geologic interpretations to generate economically justified investment opportunities for the company.
  • Ability to accurately solve problems.
  • Ability to make valuable contribution to team goals and objectives.
  • Ability to be available 24 hours per day (on call for questions, emergencies, etc.).
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials, and the public.
  • Ability to complete multiple, diverse tasks of differing priorities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with specific ability to translate complex information into an organized and presentable manner.
  • Project management, administrative, and organizational skills.
  • Required: Proficiency in PETRA or other geologic database and mapping software.
  • Preferred: Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook).
Education Requirements
  • Required: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year university or college with a degree in geology.
  • Preferred: Master's Degree from an accredited university or college with a degree in geology.
