Job summary

CHAOS Inc. is seeking Embedded Software Engineer Interns for Summer 2027. This paid, in-person, 12-week internship focuses on writing firmware that runs on sensor nodes and coordinating real-time software across distributed hardware.

You’ll gain hands-on experience with C/C++, hardware bring-up, RTOS exposure, and debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers. Collaborative, cross-disciplinary teamwork is encouraged.

Qualifications

• Willingness to work with hardware that may not function yet.

Responsibilities

• Develop firmware for sensor node control and OTA updates.

Role Overview:

CHAOS is seeking Embedded Software Engineer Interns for Summer 2027! This is a paid, in-person, 12-week internship role. Embedded software is where our hardware becomes a system. You'll write the firmware that runs on our sensor nodes and the software that keeps them synchronized to each other. This is real-time work on real constraints: timing, power, thermal, and radios that don't care about your abstractions.

What you might work on

• Firmware for sensor node control, health monitoring, and over-the-air update
• Timing and synchronization software across distributed nodes
• Drivers and board support for new hardware revisions, including first bring-up
• Interfaces between embedded targets and our signal processing and platform software
• Automated test and instrumentation for hardware-in-the-loop validation

What We Are Looking For:

• Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree OR master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
• Working proficiency in C or C++
• Exposure to embedded development through coursework, personal projects, competition teams, or prior internships -a microcontroller project you built and debugged counts
• Comfort with a logic analyzer, oscilloscope, or debugger, or eagerness to learn
• Willingness to work on hardware that doesn't work yet
• You've collaborated on the above two things as part of a group - school club, competition team, as part of a job/internship, or just with friends
• In your application, we'd love to see either a sample of work you're proud of or a short note about your prior experience and how it relates to the three points above.

Nice to have: RTOS experience, FPGA or HDL exposure, Linux device drivers, Python for tooling and test, [robotics/rocketry/CubeSat/Formula SAE] team experience.We're looking for someone who is genuinely curious about how things get built, comfortable being wrong in front of people who know more, and eager to move fast in a cross-disciplinary environment.
