2027 Spring Intern - Pharma Technical Development - Device Development

Department Summary

The Device Development organization within Roche Pharma Technical Development (PTDZ) designs, develops, and delivers innovative drug delivery systems and medical devices such Auto Injectors, Pre Filled Syringes, Pumps etc., that enable safe, effective, and differentiated healthcare experiences for patients and providers worldwide. PTDZ bridges the gap between pharmaceutical molecules and user capabilities by advancing emerging drug delivery technologies-including subcutaneous, ocular, inhalation, and intravenous systems.



  • Device & Verification Engineering: Drives end-to-end device design, physical robustness testing, and lab-based test method validation.

  • Human Factors & SMART Devices: Optimizes user-device interactions and integrates sensors and wireless connectivity for better patient experiences.

  • Operations & Project Management: Ensures agile, compliant execution across cross-functional Roche teams and external partners.


This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.


The Opportunity

The Intern in this position will be responsible for supporting activities within the Device Development department and facilitating product development capabilities. This objective may be accomplished by executing activities in the areas of:


Device Engineering


  • Work with a team of engineers to design and conduct stress and robustness testing to evaluate physical durability, mechanical limits, and environmental tolerance of medical devices.

  • Identify failure modes and performance limits during simulated use conditions, collaborating with device engineers to inform design improvements.

  • Regularly interact with external development partners and components suppliers.


Verification Engineering


  • Develop and execute test methods utilizing force measurement systems (e.g., tensile/compression testing instrumentation) to evaluate device performance against functional requirements.

  • Perform test method validation (TMV) to ensure analytical systems meet strict verification standards.

  • Verify peripheral connectivity by designing and executing integration testing between primary equipment and auxiliary equipment on qualified laboratory testing setups.


Design Control


  • Employ good document practices (GDP) when recording data, maintaining archives and drafting and reviewing documents.

  • Utilize electronic document archive system and collaborate with Document Control team to ensure document compliance with PQS standards and Design History File regulations.


Program Highlights


  • Intensive 6 months, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in January 2027 (Spring)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.


Required Education


  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Bachelor's Degree (not currently enrolled in a graduate program).

  • Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student).

  • Must have attained a Master's Degree.


Required Majors:

Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Biophysics, or related disciplines.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting.


The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $28.00-$41.00 per hour. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
