Job summary

Radiant is seeking a Materials Engineer in El Segundo, CA to lead materials testing, property evaluation, and data-driven design decisions for Kaleidos. You will guide materials selection, procure characterization equipment, and improve manufacturing processes to achieve target properties.

Ideal candidates have BS/MS in Materials Engineering or related fields, hands-on lab experience, and comfort with data analysis and cross-functional collaboration within a fast-growing startup environment.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Graduating December 2026 or Spring 2027.
• Experience in development, testing, and/or analysis of materials for demanding load cases and environments.
• Hands-on experimental or testing experience in laboratory or production environments.

• Develop and qualify application-specific manufacturing processes related to metals, ceramics, composites, or polymers.

About Radiant

Radiant is an El Segundo, CA-based startup building the world's first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactors. The company's first reactor, Kaleidos, is a 1-megawatt, fail-safe microreactor that can be transported anywhere power is needed and run for up to 5 years without refueling. Portable nuclear power with rapid-deploy capability can replace similar-sized diesel generators and provide critical asset support for hospitals, data centers, remote sites, and military bases. Radiant's unique, practical approach to nuclear development leverages modern software engineering to rapidly deliver safe, factory-built microreactors that use existing, well-qualified materials. Founded in 2020, Radiant is on track to test its first reactor at the Idaho National Laboratory this summer, with initial customer deliveries beginning in 2028.

Radiant is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer to join the team.

Responsibilities

• Plan and execute materials testing to obtain material properties to inform design decisions.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Graduating December 2026 or Spring 2027
• Experience working in the development, testing, and/or analysis of materials for demanding load cases and environments from projects, laboratory work, research, internships, or prior work experience
• Hands-on experimental or testing experience in laboratory or production environments

Desired Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Master’s or PhD degree from an accredited institution in Materials Science and Engineering, or in Mechanical, Aeronautical, Nuclear, or Welding Engineering with a materials science and engineering focus.
• Experience with development and qualification of solid-state processing of materials.
• Knowledge of standard test methods for materials and experience with development of design allowables.
• Self-motivated with strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with design and operations teams to deliver high-value results.
• Experience with using text-based software development tools (Python or similar).
