Job summary

The Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo, CA is seeking a Sr. Microelectronics Device Scientist to advance radiation-hardness-by-design and reliability for space systems. You will lead investigations into CMOS, SiGe, III-V and other advanced devices, perform radiation tests, and collaborate with internal and external partners.

Ideal candidates have a Ph.D. in related fields, strong publication potential, and ability to communicate results at conferences.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (pursuing or conferred within last 12 months).
  • 0-1 year of industry work experience.
  • Coursework related to semiconductor physics.
  • Knowledge of microelectronic and/or optoelectronic device physics (e.g., CMOS, III-V, 2D materials).
  • Experience in testing semiconductor devices.
  • Experience with Python / LabVIEW / MATLAB or similar for data analysis.
  • Willing to travel up to 10% domestically.
  • Ability to obtain/maintain a U.S. government security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
  • Transcripts required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to national security space programs and collaborators.
  • Conduct basic and applied research on microelectronic device technologies for space systems.
  • Publish results in refereed journals and present at meetings.
  • Support adoption and assessment of new technologies for space systems (reliability and radiation hardness).

Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) support the effective and timely development and operation of national security systems through scientific research and the application of advanced technologies. PSL has more than 150 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.

The Microelectronics Technology Department (MTD) is part of PSL with specialized laboratories for testing, accelerating, and analyzing, failures in electronics used for space system. MTD is comprised of two sections: one that performs radiation effects testing and discrete microelectronics testing, while the other section performs failure analysis on microelectronics using tools that can identify anomalies from the macroscopic down to the atomic scale. MTD is looking a Microelectronics Device Scientist (Sr. MTS - Microelectronics/Semiconductor Engineering) to support the investigation of radiation effects, reliability- and radiation-hardness-by-design, and physics of failure of advanced CMOS, SiGe, SOI, III-V, II-VI, GaN, GaAs, MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides, and other advanced technology for space applications.

The selected candidate will be required to work full-time, on-site at our facility in El Segundo, CA.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Provide technical support to national security space programs, internal, and academic collaborators
  • Conduct innovative basic and applied research on microelectronic device technologies and applications to space systems, including reliability and radiation hardness.
  • Present results of assessments/research internally, to customers, at scientific meetings, and publish research in refereed scientific journals.
  • Support the adoption and assessment of new technologies and applications, space systems, including reliability and radiation hardness.
  • Perform radiation testing on microelectronic and optoelectronic components using gamma-rays, x-rays, neutrons, energetic protons, and energetic heavy ions.
  • Duties, responsibilities and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned as needed
  • Training and mentorship will be provided
What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degreefrom an accredited college/university programin Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline (pursuing or conferred within last 12 months)
  • 0-1 year of industry work experience
  • Coursework related to semiconductor physics
  • Knowledge of microelectronic and/or optoelectronic device physics, such as Silicon CMOS, III-V materials, 2D semiconductors or other low-dimensional materials, topological devices, Tunnel-FETs, Ga₂O₃ and diamond, ReRAM, MRAM, FeRAM, PCM, FeFETs, or other semiconductor device systems.
  • Experience in testing semiconductor devices
  • Experience with Python / Labview / Matlab or similar software for data analysis and collection.
  • Willing to travel domestically up to 10%of the year to customer site/radiation test facility/conferences
  • This position requirestheability to obtain and maintain a securityclearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out

It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:

  • Strong publication record and demonstrated ability to develop and execute innovative research projects especially those related to microelectronics.
  • Experience designing advanced test structure using layout tools such as Cadence Virtuoso or L-Edit IC
  • Experience with radiation hardness-by-design and reliability-by-design test chip development
  • Knowledge of radiation environments and the effects of TID and SEE in microelectronics.
  • Experience in microelectronics reliability, RF testing and or radiation testing
  • Experience with GaN, GaAS, SiGe or related RF/5G semiconductor technology
  • Experience with modeling / simulation of radiation effects or radiation transport using TCAD tools, MCNP, SRIM, GEANT4, or CRÈME96
  • Experience with VHDL/Verilog/FPGA/Microprocessor programming
