Job summary

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) invites motivated STEM students to join the Space Algorithms and Technologies group as an intern. You will help design, develop, and assess space technologies and algorithms for national security space applications.

You will work on modeling, simulations, and testing of space systems, with exposure to photonics and sensor hardware development for spacecraft payloads. Strong programming skills and a desire to learn are essential.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computational Sciences or a related technical field.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
  • Have an interest in technologies or algorithms related to space control applications.
  • Have development experience with C/C++, Matlab, Python or equivalent programming languages.
  • Have the ability to complete tasking requirements without direct oversight.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Are able to obtain a TS/SCI level clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

If you are pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computational Sciences or a related technical field, we'd love to have you join our team!


We are seeking a driven engineer, mathematician, or scientist to help us continue designing, developing and assessing the various space technologies and algorithms.


You'll be joining a hardworking team who balances independent work and team work on a variety of space-based projects.


Our group maintains proficiencies in photonics, signatures, advanced technology applications, orbital engagements, space control concept assessment, autonomous operations, and multi-disciplinary optimization.


As an intern in the Space Algorithms and Technologies group, your duties could include:



  • Developing and testing space components for internal research and development efforts

  • Working with models and simulations of current, proposed and future space systems, sensors and constellations.

  • Exploring algorithms to improve and assess performance of space systems.


Our team comes from a variety of backgrounds and heavily leverages programming and modeling skills. We also run a photonics lab where we develop sensor hardware for spacecraft payloads.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
