Job summary

Hoare Lea is a leading sustainability-focused engineering consultancy in the built environment. This graduate role offers hands-on experience across healthcare, hospitality, retail and residential sectors, with opportunities to contribute to energy modelling and energy strategies from day one.

You will engage in environmental assessments (BREEAM, WELL) and learn about whole life carbon reporting, while benefiting from structured CPD, mentorship and a clear development path toward Chartership.

Qualifications

  • 2.1 degree or above in Engineering, Architecture, or Built Environment or similar.
  • Appreciation of broader sustainability issues (governance, reporting, strategies, climate adaptation).
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently.
  • Friendly, ambitious and flexible individual.

Responsibilities

  • Work on live projects from day one across healthcare, hotels, retail and residential sectors.
  • Undertake building performance simulation and energy workstreams using modelling tools.
  • Develop energy strategies with clients to drive sustainability innovations.
  • Assist in environmental assessments (BREEAM, WELL, HQM) from design to completion.
  • Develop understanding of whole life carbon reporting for Net Zero strategies.
  • Conduct site surveys and research new technologies.
  • Engage in CPD and learning opportunities and support holistic Sustainability Strategies.

The Role

Being part of one of the UK's largest building engineering consultancies, we benefit from collaborating with some of the best engineers in the business, with access to state‑of‑the‑art technical support, and have the opportunity to work on some of the largest and most high‑profile projects as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.

Canolfan Pentre Awel in Carmarthen, Multi-Megawatt Data Centre Campus, Oxford North in Oxford, One Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, Gwynfaen in Swansea, and the nature‑based net‑zero neighbourhood of Earls Court in London are examples of some of the amazing projects where we have led the design with other Hoare Lea disciplines.

As a Graduate Sustainability Consultant
  • Working on live projects from day one - our exciting projects
  • In a variety of sectors from healthcare to hotels, retail to residential
  • Undertaking building performance simulation and energy related workstreams, using a range of modelling approaches, tools, and techniques
  • Developing energy strategies with our clients to lead sustainability innovation on a series of developments
  • Assisting in the delivery of environmental assessments (such as BREEAM, WELL, HQM, etc) from early design stages through to completion
  • Developing an understanding and knowledge of whole life carbon reporting to support clients Net Zero Carbon strategies
  • Undertaking site surveys
  • Researching ground‑breaking technologies
  • Continuous CPD and learning opportunities
  • Supporting the development of holistic Sustainability Strategies, where necessary

As well as project‑related work, the Group engages directly with industry undertaking research and development studies, and authoring industry guidance. We hold key positions on national design commissions and influential industry bodies. The role also presents the opportunity for involvement in this aspect of the Group’s work to those keen to have a direct influence on the industry.

Communicating will span all of these, as we regularly liaise with project teams, meet clients or end users, and attend collaborative meetings.

About you

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be serious about sustainability, and have…

  • An expected or achieved 2.1 or above degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Architecture, or the Built Environment, or similar
  • An appreciation of broader sustainability issues, such as sustainability governance and reporting, sustainability strategies, climate change adaptation, behaviour change, etc.
  • Excellent communication, analytical and organisational skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment and independently
  • A friendly, ambitious and confident individual with a flexible and resilient approach

It would be an advantage, but not necessary, if you also had…

  • A Masters or other relevant post graduate qualification
  • Previous placement or work experience in a similar industry
  • Knowledge / awareness of one or more of the following: BREEAM, WELL, Whole Life Carbon, Energy Modelling
