Job summary

Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory is seeking a Data Analyst to evaluate system performance and support an analytics team focused on defense systems. You will analyze data to improve combat system design, build automated tools for large data sets, and present findings to sponsors and peers.

The role requires a BS/MS in a related field, strong MATLAB/Python skills, and eligibility for Interim Secret then Secret clearance.

The Engagement Optimization Group is a group of software and systems engineers, systems analysts, mathematicians, and technical leaders who apply innovative solutions to real-world defense system problems.

We are seeking a Data Analyst to evaluate system performance and join a hardworking missile defense analytics team dedicated to ensuring warfighters have the capabilities to accomplish numerous missions that are crucial to the defense of our nation.

As a Data Analyst supporting combat system requirements, design, test and evaluation...

  • Your primary responsibility will be analyzing data to identify and implement improvements to combat system design.
  • Build, maintain, and improve automated software tools to enable rapid analysis of large data sets from complex operational systems to aid in the discovery and recognition of trends, characterize system performance, and perform root cause analysis.
  • Drive new design features and provide technical recommendations based on analysis.
  • Deliver presentations to sponsors and engineering community working groups; effectively communicate proposed concepts, engineering results, and recommendations.
  • Propose innovative new solutions for next-generation Engagement Optimization capabilities. Grow into a leadership role coordinating internal and external analysis activities.
Qualifications

  • Have earned a BS or MS in Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Have experience programming and scripting in software languages such as MATLAB or Python.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills.
  • Thrive in a collaborative environment, including work with multi-disciplinary teams and multiple organizations.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and ultimately obtain a Secret level clearance. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

  • Possess strong MATLAB and/or Python scripting skills.
  • Have experience working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and using these tools in your workflow.
  • Are willing and able to travel.
  • Have experience in Aegis Weapon System performance assessment and/or Missile Defense Agency (MDA) ground and flight test analysis.
  • Hold an active Secret or Top Secret security clearance.

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL's good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
