Job summary

Roles and Responsibilities

• Collaborate with senior electrical engineers in the NIC division to design, prototype, and validate mission‑critical electrical systems, including power distribution, signal conditioning, and high‑speed interconnects.
• Develop detailed schematic drawings, PCB layouts, and bill‑of‑materials (BOM).
• Perform functional and environmental testing on electronic subsystems, including thermal cycling, EMC/EMI verification, and vibration regression, to meet MIL‑STD‑810 and MIL‑STD‑461 requirements.
• Execute firmware development and debugging on microcontrollers and FPGAs writing clean C/C++ and HDL code that satisfies safety‑critical constraints.
• Integrate electrical subsystems with mechanical and software teams, ensuring that power budgets, signal integrity, and environmental requirements are met across the full system architecture.
• Participate in design reviews, safety analyses certification activities, and preparing required documentation for audits and reviews.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes, including template creation, SOP development, and best‑practice knowledge sharing.
• Support the setup and maintenance of test rigs, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other test equipment to enable rapid firmware and hardware validation.
• Investigate and prototype emerging technologies such as wireless IPSEC connectivity, edge‑processing solutions, and advanced power‑management ICs to enhance system resilience and performance.

Basic Qualifications

• Be a student who is enrolled full-time and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university and will be enrolled full time in Fall 2027
• Be majoring in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related STEM degree.
• Be available to work full-time (40 hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during summer 2027.
• Be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance (U.S. citizenship is a pre‑requisite) as well as Program Special access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs (U.S. citizenship is a pre‑requisite).

Preferred Qualifications

• Have an overall cumulative GPA of 3.00/4.0 or higher
• Hands on experience with embedded C/C++ development on real time platforms.
• Familiarity with safety critical software development processes and standards (e.g., DO 178C, ISO26262).
• Experience with industry‑standard EDA tools (Altium Designer, Cadence OrCAD, KiCad).
• Proficiency in Python for rapid prototyping and data analysis.
• Experience with Agile/Scrum practices, automated testing frameworks, and code review tools.
• Experience or knowledge of firmware development and debugging on microcontrollers (ARM Cortex‑M, TI MSP430) and FPGAs (Xilinx, Intel).
• Experience with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and other test equipment to enable rapid firmware and hardware validation.
• Exposure to defense acquisition or DoD software lifecycle processes is a plus.
• Intern Pay Range: Bachelor’s: $21.50 to $39.00 per hour Master’s: $30.50 to $48.00 per hour.

Primary Level Salary Range

• Primary Level Salary Range: $19.50 - $35.50

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
