Job description

The University of California, Berkeley is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in African History in the Department of History. Applicants working on any field, area, or period of African History will be considered, including political, economic, environmental, cultural, intellectual, social, diplomatic, transnational, gender and sexuality, borderlands, migration, and diaspora history .


United States, California. The position is based at the University of California, Berkeley.



  • Scholars working in African History, defined for this position as the past of human societies on the African continent.

  • Candidates from all fields, areas, and periods of African History will be considered.

  • Relevant areas may include political, economic, environmental, cultural, intellectual, social, diplomatic, and transnational history.

  • The search also includes areas such as the history of gender and sexuality, borderlands, migration, and diaspora.

  • Candidates who have not completed their Ph.D. may submit as much of their dissertation draft as possible as part of the required scholarly work submission.


Key Benefits / Salary / Funding


  • Salary range: $84,100 to $132,900 for the 9-month academic year.

  • Off‑scale salary and other compensation components may be offered to meet competitive conditions.

  • Full‑time tenure‑track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level.

The service statement should discuss specific prior and proposed activities that align with the school’s public mission. Relevant activities may include:

  • Published and/or Unpublished Scholarly Work 1: a dissertation or published monograph based on the dissertation. Candidates who have not completed their Ph.D. should submit as much of the dissertation draft as possible.

  • Published and/or Unpublished Scholarly Work 2.

  • Completed and signed Authorization to Release Information Form.

  • Three letters of reference.
