Description

Are you motivated by imagining creative solutions to tough problems?

Are you searching for a role that leads to significant real‑world impacts by applying your strengths in 2D materials and electronic devices?

If so, we are looking for someone like you to join our team at APL.

The Electronic Materials and Microsystems Group is seeking a creative and driven post‑doctoral fellow with experience in 2D materials and electronic devices to help develop solutions to varied problems. You will apply your strong background in 2D semiconductor materials to develop solutions for the government’s most significant problems. 2D‑materials driven electronic devices require in‑depth understanding of semiconductor material physics as well as how to manipulate key phenomena to achieve device needs. Fundamental capabilities are developed towards applications (e.g. radiovoltaics, ferroelectrics, thermoelectrics) to advance the future of 2D‑materials driven electronic devices, realize impact, and define future areas of research. This post‑doctoral position will focus on developing new electronic devices based on 2D materials to realize impact in real‑world energy conversion and other electronic applications.

Envision joining a collaborative team that is passionate about research and committed to excellence in innovation, technology transition, and open communication. We strive to cultivate a collaborative atmosphere to achieve groundbreaking impact. Our APL team values integrity and innovative ideas that will ensure our Nation’s preeminence in the 21st century.

We enable our team members to generate and lead their own research ideas as well as publish their findings in leading journals. At APL, we encourage hardworking, multidisciplinary teams committed to solving varied problems while embracing risk with the goal of realizing creative solutions for our sponsors and the world at large. Our group strives to foster a collaborative ecosystem with world‑class expertise that achieves innovative impact.

As a post‑doctoral fellow, you will have the opportunity to work with experts in advanced thermoelectric, radiovoltaic and other materials and devices, epitaxial materials synthesis, characterization, thin‑film device fabrication, prototype development for a range of applications, and more. You will support ongoing research projects as well as pursue new, creative concepts. This fellowship is for a one‑year term, renewable for a second year upon the successful completion of the first year.

Responsibilities
  • Design and lead an independent research project focused on developing new technical capabilities for new research areas.
  • Perform experiments at the direction of a project manager and assist with the development of new materials and devices via a host of capabilities including: MOCVD, MBE, photolithography, etching, plating, and a wide variety of characterization tools for materials and device analysis.
  • Perform detailed data analysis, explain characterization results, and propose next steps.
  • Communicate well through presentations of technical work internally and in external meetings and conferences.
  • Work on research projects both independently and as part of a team.
  • Develop and propose your own research projects.
  • Publish your research in high‑impact journals and present at leading conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a Ph.D. in EE, Physics, Materials Science with a background in semiconductor materials and 2D electronic materials.
  • Have demonstrated device‑oriented research experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Have a background and strong experience in semiconductor electronic materials and device fundamentals.
  • Have published research in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Are comfortable communicating research findings in various settings.
  • Are willing and able to carry out laboratory research and travel for presentations, sponsor visits, conference attendance, and presentations.
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Security clearance eligibility requires you to be a U.S. citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Have hands‑on experience in research in 2D materials and experience in translating material advances to functional devices.
  • Are directly familiar with radiovoltaics, thermoelectrics, ferroelectrics, or related classes of materials.
  • Have experience writing research proposals.
  • Have experience working as member of a team in a collaborative manner.
  • Have experience as a mentor and/or leader in university lab/research settings.
