Position Details

The Department of Art is housed in the College of Arts and Letters. At the undergraduate level, it offers a BFA degree in Studio Art, and BA degrees in Art, Art History, and Art Education (Single Subject Pre‑Credential Preparation for grades K‑12). At the graduate level, it offers an MFA degree in Studio Art. The Art Department is accredited by the National Association of Art & Design (NASAD).

Job Summary

Part‑time lecturers will teach undergraduate courses in the Department of Art. Instruction, class preparation, grading, Canvas course management, and office hours are core duties. Other duties may be assigned based on departmental needs. Course assignments, including dates, time, and modality, are determined by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate classes in Art Education for children and Secondary Art Education, conforming to national and California visual art standards.
• Teach undergraduate classes in Western and non‑Western art, art criticism, and visual culture from pre‑history to the present.
• Teach undergraduate classes in art and visual culture, ceramics, drawing & painting, new media art and animation, printmaking, and sculpture.

Qualifications

In general, a terminal degree in the field is required. The following are specific requirements for each content area:

Art Education

• Required: M.A. in Art Education or M.F.A. in Studio Art, plus K‑12 teaching experience in district settings.
• Preferred: Ph.D. in Art Education; public school teaching experience, and/or college teaching experience in art education.

Art History

• Required: M.A. for lower‑division courses; Ph.D. for upper‑division courses. College teaching experience in Art History.
• Preferred: Ph.D. for lower‑division courses.

Studio Art

• Required: M.F.A. in Studio Art.
• Preferred: College teaching experience.

Part‑Time Lecturer Salary Ranges (as of July 2024)

• Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677
• Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224
• Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523
• Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211

Salary is calculated on a full‑time rate (15 weighted teaching units) and pro‑rated for the units assigned. Semester compensation is paid in six checks.

Existing lecturers: Submit an updated CV/Resume that includes qualifications, degrees, courses taught at Sac State (course, semester, year), teaching experience at other higher‑educational institutions, other professional experience, and indicate what courses you believe you are qualified to teach. Reapply each year for semester/annual appointments and in the third year for three‑year appointments.

New applicants: Provide a cover letter outlining courses for which you are prepared to teach. Include a complete CV with qualifications, degrees, teaching experience (dates), summaries of courses taught, unofficial transcripts of highest degree, three references, sample syllabi, and evidence of a minimum 10‑hour online training course if teaching >50% online. For Art Education, submit a portfolio of up to 20 images of students’ work. For Studio Art, submit a portfolio of your work and 20 images of students’ work. Videos must be hosted on Vimeo.
